3 Dead, Several Injured in Mlima Kiu Highway Crash: Tragedy Strikes Again
Three people, including a 10-year-old child, lost their lives in a horrific road accident at Mlima Kiu along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway on Friday evening, July 4.
The grisly accident occurred near Salama town and involved a speeding truck, a private vehicle, and two passenger Nissan matatus. According to eyewitnesses, the truck lost control while descending the steep stretch of Mlima Kiu.
“The truck was speeding. It suddenly swerved from its lane and rammed into an oncoming car. Then it crushed the two matatus behind it,” one bystander told reporters.
Scene of Destruction
The impact was devastating. The truck reportedly crushed the smaller vehicles, leaving twisted metal and debris scattered across the highway.
“It was chaos. People were screaming, others trying to help. We pulled bodies and injured passengers from the wreckage,” another witness said.

Images from the scene showed the full extent of the destruction. Crumpled vehicles were left hanging on the roadside. Broken glass and bloodstains marked the tarmac.
Swift Emergency Response
Within minutes, emergency responders and good Samaritans rushed to help the victims. Rescue teams retrieved the bodies and evacuated the injured to Sultan Hamud Hospital.
“The injured needed urgent attention. Some were unconscious, others crying in pain. We did our best before ambulances arrived,” a local volunteer shared.
Sadly, three victims died on the spot. The injured, whose number has yet to be officially confirmed, are undergoing treatment.
Traffic Snarls for Hours
The wreck caused a major traffic jam, with vehicles stuck on both sides of the highway for hours.
“We had to wait for the police and rescuers to clear the road. It took nearly four hours,” said a passenger caught in the jam.
Police have since launched an investigation into the crash. They are urging motorists to be cautious, especially along steep and dangerous highway sections.
Another Tragic Accident Earlier
Shockingly, this accident came just hours after another fatal crash along the Taita Taveta-Mombasa highway.

A Nation in Mourning
These back-to-back incidents have left many Kenyans in grief, once again raising questions about road safety.
“We cannot keep losing innocent lives this way. Something must change,” said a concerned Nairobi resident.
