IG Kanja Breaks Silence on Samidoh Transfer: “It’s Procedural, Not Political”

Kenya’s popular Mugithi star Samuel Muchoki, known as Samidoh, has found himself at the heart of a heated national debate.

After a video of his May 16 performance went viral, public attention exploded. In the footage, fans chanted “Wantam!”—a slogan perceived to oppose President William Ruto’s second term bid. Samidoh’s visible excitement during the chant fueled speculation that he was supporting the anti-government message.

The Fallout: Transfer Sparks Public Outcry

Shortly after the video emerged, reports on May 27 claimed that Samidoh had been transferred from his post in the Central region. Sources linked his transfer to the now-viral performance. The singer, a serving police officer, was allegedly moved to the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) in Gilgil.

This sparked massive backlash from fans and opposition leaders. Many questioned whether the move was political punishment rather than routine police operations.

IG Kanja Responds: “Transfers Are Normal”

Amid growing pressure, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja addressed the issue on Wednesday, May 28. He clarified that police transfers are routine and procedural, not politically driven.

“These officers are civil servants and are subject to regulations and procedures, including transfers,” Kanja stated firmly.

He did not mention Samidoh directly, but the timing of the clarification left little doubt.

“If an officer is one of us, he can be subjected to those conditions and might be transferred,” Kanja added.

Behind the Scenes: Political Tensions Rise

The transfer happened despite Samidoh’s recent visit to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s residence on Friday. That meeting further muddied the waters.

Opposition leader Rigathi Gachagua criticized the visit, calling on all musicians who met Kindiki to apologize or face a boycott. This harsh demand stirred more debate over freedom of expression and political intimidation.

Samidoh’s Cryptic Comeback

In response to the storm, Samidoh took to social media. He posted a mysterious message that fans quickly linked to his current troubles.

“In a war of egos, the loser wins,” he wrote.

The post left followers interpreting his words as a calm but firm stand against political pressure.

What’s Next for Samidoh?

As speculation lingers, one thing is clear: this case has stirred emotions, politics, and public interest all at once.

IG Kanja insists it’s business as usual, but for many Kenyans, Samidoh’s case raises tough questions about art, freedom, and state power.
