Sagana State Lodge: Rare Photos of Historic President’s House During Mt. Kenya Tour
His visit has stirred political debates, especially after he made shocking claims in an explosive media interview. Ruto alleged that Gachagua demanded KSh 10 billion, a request he firmly rejected.
Despite the political storm, the tour will focus on key development projects, including the commissioning of the New KCC Kiganjo Factory to support small-scale dairy farmers.
A Glimpse Inside Sagana State Lodge
During his stay, President Ruto is expected to reside at the Sagana State Lodge, a prestigious and historically significant presidential retreat in Nyeri County.
This exclusive lodge, situated at the foothills of Mt. Kenya, has played a crucial role in Kenya’s history. It has hosted state meetings, presidential retreats, and major government functions
Where Queen Elizabeth Became Monarch
Sagana Lodge was originally a gift to Princess Elizabeth in 1947 from the people of Kenya as a wedding present when she married Prince Philip.
In 1952, while staying at Sagana with Prince Philip, Elizabeth received heartbreaking news—her father, King George VI, had died overnight. At that moment, she became the Queen of England.
In December 1963, after Kenya’s independence, Queen Elizabeth handed back the lodge to the Kenyan government. It has since remained a key presidential residence.
Presidents Who Have Used Sagana Lodge
The lodge underwent a major facelift in 2003, when former President Mwai Kibaki spent KSh 57 million on renovations.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta frequently used the lodge, including for the swearing-in of a cabinet secretary.

President Ruto last stayed at Sagana in August 2023, when he chaired his first cabinet meeting there. Now, he returns amid heightened political tensions.
Inside the Grand Presidential Meeting Room
A newly released Presidential Strategic Communication Unit (PSCU) photo reveals an exclusive look inside Sagana Lodge.
The elegant meeting room features:
A high wooden ceiling with stylish lighting
A large rectangular table for cabinet meetings
A luxurious brown carpet that adds a touch of prestige
At the head of the table, President Ruto’s seat is flanked by the national flag, the presidential standard, and military flags.
The Majestic Outdoor Setting
Sagana Lodge’s vast compound boasts:
Lush green gardens
Paved pathways weaving through the lawns
A covered walkway that protects visitors from the elements
A Symbol of Presidential Power
Sagana is one of four state lodges in Kenya, alongside Eldoret, Kisumu, and Kakamega. The country has only three official State Houses, located in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Nakuru.
With Ruto’s presence, Sagana Lodge remains a key landmark, shaping the nation’s political and historical journey.
