Moses Wetang’ula Dismisses Azimio’s Calls for Resignation: “”No Motion, No Resignation”

The High Court has raised concerns about National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s leadership, questioning his neutrality in the House. The court argued that as the leader of the Ford Kenya party, Wetang’ula’s position as Speaker presents a conflict of interest.

Among the court’s key rulings was the claim that Wetang’ula’s decision to declare Kenya Kwanza as the majority side in Parliament was questionable. This ruling has fueled pressure from Azimio La Umoja MPs, demanding that he step down.

Millie Odhiambo Leads Resignation Calls

When Parliament resumed on Tuesday, February 11, Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo led the charge, urging Wetang’ula to vacate his seat. She argued that his dual role as Speaker and Ford Kenya leader undermined his impartiality.

“Mr. Speaker, I humbly request you to step down and mandate Gladys Boss Shollei to take over in discharging the functions as Speaker because of your conflict of interest,” Millie stated.

She further insisted that Parliament must respect court rulings, even if they disagree with them. To cement Azimio’s stance, Millie, in a letter, named Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and Kathiani MP Robert Mbui as the majority and deputy majority leaders, respectively. She also declared herself the new majority whip.

Wetang’ula Hits Back

In response, Wetang’ula swiftly shut down the demands, dismissing them as baseless. He argued that the High Court ruling did not explicitly require him to resign.

“There’s no motion before this House about the Speaker. I am a senior lawyer in this country, and I’m your senior, Millie Odhiambo. I have read that judgment with a tooth comb, and there’s nowhere it requires the Speaker to do what you are saying,” he stated.

Wetang’ula further clarified that the judgment did not question his credibility but only pointed out potential conflicts. He reassured MPs that he remains committed to fairness in his leadership.

The Political Tension Continues

Despite Wetang’ula’s firm stance, Azimio MPs remain adamant about their position. The matter is likely to escalate, especially with the 2027 elections approaching. Whether a formal motion will be filed to challenge Wetang’ula’s leadership remains to be seen.
