Pain as Boda Boda Rider Dies Days After Alleged Assault by KFS Officers

Baringo – Grief has engulfed a family in Eldama Ravine after a 26-year-old boda boda rider died days after an alleged brutal assault by Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officers. Augustine Kipng’etich was reportedly shot in the right leg by officers from Narasha Forest Station while running an errand. Despite receiving treatment at Nakuru Level 5 Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries on Friday, February 7.

How Was Kipng’etich Attacked?

His family, living near Narasha Forest, narrated the painful ordeal. He had gone to collect fencing posts for a client when gunshots rang out. Alarmed, his family rushed to the scene.

His mother, Jane Rotich, recounted the heartbreaking moment.

“When we arrived, the officers chased us away. I pleaded to see my child, but they refused and even pointed guns at me. When I finally reached him, I found my son struggling for his life,” she said.

His father expressed similar anguish.

“Boda boda riders run errands everywhere. He was called to assist with work in the forest but never returned. When I arrived, I found my son had been shot,” he added.

Kipng’etich, a father of young children, leaves behind a devastated family seeking justice.

KFS Officers Charged

Three officers, Robert Ngilimo, Hillary Bett, and McDonald Wafula, were charged at Eldama Ravine Law Courts on February 6 for attacking boda boda riders. Kenya Forest Service acknowledged the incident and condemned the actions of its officers.

Chief Conservator of Forests, Alex Lemarkoko, stated:

“This is a very unfortunate incident. We do not condone such actions by our rangers or security personnel against members of the public.”

Marakwet West MP Timothy Toroitich also condemned the attack, warning that officers should never take the law into their own hands.

“Under Article 50, everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” he said.

Residents Demand Justice

The incident has sparked outrage among locals, who are now demanding justice for Kipng’etich’s grieving family. Protesters have called on authorities to ensure those responsible face the full force of the law.
