EPRA Announces Ksh4.70 Per kWh in Electricity Charges for August

Kenyan households and businesses will face additional electricity charges in August after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced three adjustments totaling Ksh4.70 per kilowatt-hour for meter readings taken during the month.

The new charges were announced through Gazette Notices dated Friday, August 14, 2026, with the adjustments covering fuel energy costs, foreign exchange fluctuations and water resource management.

EPRA set the Fuel Energy Cost Charge at Ksh3.51 per kWh, the Foreign Exchange Fluctuation Adjustment at Ksh1.1777 per kWh, and the Water Resource Management Authority (WRMA) levy at Ksh0.015 per kWh.

Combined, the three charges amount to Ksh4.7027 per kWh for electricity meter readings taken in August.

EPRA Explains Electricity Fuel Charge

EPRA attributed the fuel energy charge to electricity generated and purchased from different power plants during July.

The calculation included power generated from diesel, geothermal and thermal plants, as well as electricity imported into the country.

“Notice is given that all prices for Electrical Energy specified in Part II of the said Schedule will be liable to a Fuel Energy Cost Charge of Plus 351 Kenya cents per kWh for all meter readings to be taken in August 2026.”

The regulator’s schedule showed significant differences in fuel costs among isolated thermal power stations.

North Horr recorded a fuel cost of Ksh396.12 per kWh, while Rhamu recorded Ksh363.18 and Baragoi Ksh346.75 per kWh.

These costs form part of the broader calculation used to determine the fuel energy component applied to electricity bills.

Foreign Exchange Charge Adds to August Bills

EPRA also announced a foreign exchange fluctuation adjustment of Ksh1.1777 per kWh.

The regulator said the charge was linked to exchange-rate gains and losses incurred by companies involved in electricity generation and supply.

The adjustment involved Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), Kenya Power and Independent Power Producers.

According to EPRA, the total foreign exchange gains and losses amounted to about Ksh1.353 billion.

The additional charge means consumers will pay more under the foreign exchange component of their electricity bills for August.

WRMA Levy Included

Another component of the August adjustment is the Water Resource Management Authority levy.

EPRA set the levy at Ksh0.015 per kWh.

The charge is associated with the use of water resources in electricity generation, particularly hydropower.

While the amount is relatively small compared with the fuel and foreign exchange adjustments, it contributes to the overall cost applied to electricity consumption.

EPRA clarified that the three adjustments do not represent the entire electricity tariff paid by consumers.

Electricity bills also include other approved tariff components, taxes and statutory levies. The final amount paid by each consumer therefore depends on electricity consumption and the applicable billing structure.

Kenya Power Raises Grid Stability Concerns

The latest announcement comes days after Kenya Power warned about the potential impact of rapidly changing electricity generation patterns on the national grid.

The company has called for careful management of variable renewable energy sources, particularly wind and solar power.

Kenya Power said the intermittent nature of these sources can make it harder to maintain stable frequency and voltage when electricity output changes sharply.

The company has therefore urged policymakers to consider the cost of maintaining grid stability when approving new renewable energy projects.

For consumers, the August adjustments add pressure to household and business budgets at a time when electricity remains a key operating cost.

The new EPRA charges will apply to meter readings taken in August 2026, adding a fresh component to the electricity bills issued to Kenyan consumers.
