Autopsy Confirms Nanyuki Ebola Protester Died From Gunshot

A postmortem examination has confirmed that a 27-year-old man who died during protests in Nanyuki against a proposed Ebola quarantine facility succumbed to a gunshot wound, intensifying calls for an independent investigation into the use of force during the demonstrations.

The postmortem report, reviewed by local media, indicates that the bullet entered through the front and side of the victim’s left shoulder and exited through the upper right shoulder area. The examination was conducted through an independent process sponsored by the human rights organization VOCAL Africa.

In a statement, VOCAL Africa said the findings provided evidence that the victim was struck by a projectile that caused fatal injuries and called for accountability.

“The medical evaluation revealed the bullet entered the anterolateral aspect of his left shoulder and exited through the right upper shoulder area, establishing clear evidence of lethal force.”

Protests and unrest

The demonstrations began after reports emerged of plans to establish a quarantine facility at Laikipia Air Base as part of Ebola preparedness efforts. Many residents said they had not been adequately consulted and feared potential health and economic impacts.

What started as a community protest escalated into clashes with anti-riot police, with roads blocked and transport disrupted. Authorities reported that two people died and two others suffered gunshot injuries during the unrest.

Police arrested 31 protesters during the disturbances. The suspects were later arraigned at Nanyuki Law Courts on charges related to obstructing motor vehicles.

Political and legal developments

The protests also attracted political attention. John Methu publicly opposed the proposed facility, arguing that foreign nationals should receive treatment in their own countries rather than being transferred abroad.

Following public backlash, the High Court of Kenya issued orders suspending the implementation of the quarantine project pending legal review. The case remains before the courts.

What authorities and activists are saying

Government and U.S. position

Officials have argued that the proposed facility is intended as a preparedness measure in case of regional Ebola transmission.

VOCAL Africa position

The organization is demanding a transparent criminal investigation and prosecution of anyone found responsible for the shooting.

Human rights groups say the central question now is whether security forces acted lawfully and proportionately during the demonstrations.

As investigations continue, attention is expected to focus on forensic evidence, police deployment records, witness testimony, and command decisions made during the protests.
