Opposition Leaders Demand Action After Attack on Senator Osotsi

Opposition leaders have intensified calls for accountability following a violent attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, with fresh demands for the resignation of Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.

Speaking during a press briefing, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka accused Omollo of being linked to a series of violent incidents targeting leaders opposed to the government. He argued that the PS’s name has repeatedly surfaced in connection with alleged attacks and intimidation.

“Raymond Omollo should immediately resign. We demand that he resign immediately and we are giving him up to tomorrow. Raymond Omollo’s name is plainly placed before Kenyans and these are his goons,” Kalonzo stated.

He further warned that failure to step down voluntarily should prompt action from President William Ruto, failing which both could face legal consequences.

“If he does not resign, his boss, Ruto, should fire him. If he doesn’t, then we’ll go for both,” Kalonzo added.

Other leaders present echoed similar concerns, calling for the immediate arrest of individuals allegedly captured in footage linked to the attack. Saboti MP Caleb Amisi claimed that those responsible are well known to authorities.

“These individuals are well known, yet the Inspector General and the DCI have allowed this to happen. I am calling on the police to make arrests,” Amisi said.

Siaya Governor James Orengo also expressed frustration over what he termed as slow progress in investigations. In a statement shared on April 9, Orengo pointed to the existence of clear CCTV footage showing the attackers, yet no arrests had been made.

“Deeply disappointed by the lack of progress at Kisumu Central Police Station following the targeted attack on Senator Godfrey Osotsi. Despite clear images of the attackers circulating, no arrests have been made,” Orengo stated.

The incident occurred in Kisumu, where the senator was reportedly attacked inside a café by a group of youths. CCTV footage that later surfaced shows Osotsi being pinned to the floor as several assailants closed in on him.

The video depicts the senator attempting to flee while shielding himself from blows, as at least three attackers slap and kick him repeatedly. Moments later, blood is seen on the floor, indicating the severity of the injuries sustained during the assault.

Following the attack, Osotsi was airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment. Leaders allied to him have since condemned the incident, describing it as politically motivated.

Orengo further linked the attack to what he described as a broader pattern of intimidation against opposition figures.

“This is a clearly coordinated and organised pattern of intimidation aimed at silencing the voices of the people, coming as a second direct hit after the violent assault at the Grand Royal Swiss Hotel on the eve of our Kakamega rally,” he said.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino also criticized the Ministry of Interior, placing responsibility on PS Omollo for what he termed as state-sponsored violence.

The allegations against Omollo are not new. Various opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, as well as factions within the opposition coalition, have previously accused him of facilitating disruptions at political rallies.

As pressure mounts, attention now turns to the government’s response and whether investigations will lead to arrests or further political confrontation in the coming days.
