Missing Kenyan Student in UK Found Dead in River Weeks After Disappearance
A Kenyan student who had been reported missing in the United Kingdom has been found dead, weeks after her disappearance triggered concern among her family, friends, and members of the Kenyan diaspora.
According to police, the discovery was made during an ongoing search operation conducted by Thames Valley Police, with support from the Berkshire Buckinghamshire and Surrey Lowland Search & Rescue team.
Mmbali had been reported missing after she disappeared on February 1, prompting weeks of intensive search efforts and public appeals for information about her whereabouts.

In a statement issued following the discovery, police said formal identification procedures were still underway but investigators strongly believed the body recovered from the river belonged to the missing Kenyan student.
“Formal identification of the woman has not yet taken place, but it is believed to be missing woman Edna, aged 31, from Wraysbury, who was reported missing on 1 February 2026. Edna’s next of kin have been informed,” a statement from Thames Valley Police Windsor and Maidenhead read.
Mmbali was pursuing a Master’s degree at York St John University, where she had been enrolled for postgraduate studies. Originally from Kitale, she had been living in Wraysbury while continuing her academic program in the UK.
According to investigators, Mmbali was last seen on the afternoon of February 1 when she reportedly left her residence to go for a walk — an activity that family members say was part of her usual routine.
Relatives described the silence as unusual, noting that Mmbali had always maintained regular contact with family members back home in Kenya.

Several organizations and institutions also stepped in to assist with the search efforts. These included the Kenyan human rights organization HAKI Africa, as well as officials from the Kenya High Commission in the United Kingdom, who were reported to be closely monitoring the situation.
Family members described Mmbali as a calm and soft-spoken individual who was deeply committed to her studies and personal growth. Standing approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, she was remembered by loved ones as hardworking and dedicated to building a better future through education.
During the weeks she remained missing, her family continued to appeal to the public for any information that could help locate her. On Sunday, March 8, just hours before news of the discovery emerged, relatives had organized a virtual prayer meeting, hoping for her safe return.
The discovery of her body has now brought a tragic end to weeks of uncertainty and anxiety for her loved ones.
Police have indicated that further details will be released once formal identification procedures and forensic examinations are completed.

Meanwhile, the Kenyan community both in the UK and at home has continued to express condolences to the family as they begin to come to terms with the loss.
