Radio Maisha Presenter Quits After 9 Years to Join Politics
Shugaboy hosted his final episode of the station’s flagship morning programme Maisha Asubuhi on February 27, 2026, alongside his longtime co-host Main Man Rio. The emotional send-off brought to a close nearly a decade of consistent presence on Kenyan airwaves, where he had become a familiar and influential voice.
In a candid farewell message shared on his social media platforms, Shugaboy reflected on his journey from a novice presenter to a seasoned media personality. “I came in with little or no skills, but I am leaving fully equipped and ready to face the next step of my life’s journey,” he wrote, acknowledging the role the station played in shaping his career.
The presenter also revealed details of the financial success he attributes to his time in radio, offering a rare glimpse into the economic opportunities within the media industry. In his statement, he listed several assets acquired over the years, including vehicles, land, and rental properties.

“Apart from the sweet and sour memories, this station has really built me. I am not a show-off person but today allows me to list all the things that this station has enabled me to acquire,” he stated, before outlining his investments. Among them are three personal cars, two 14-seater matatus, a tuk-tuk, five motorbikes used for boda boda operations, a pub, two Swahili rental houses, four parcels of land, and a five-bedroom house currently under construction.
Shugaboy made it clear that his departure from radio is not temporary, noting that a return to broadcasting would only be considered under specific conditions. “Not joining any other media house again unless for a pay above 700k, non-negotiable,” he declared, signaling a firm stance on his professional worth.
His exit comes at a time of transition for Radio Maisha, which is owned by the Standard Group Media. The station is set to undergo a rebrand under the hashtag MwamkoMpya beginning March 2, 2026, in what insiders describe as a strategic shift aimed at refreshing its programming and audience engagement.
Shugaboy’s departure is part of a broader wave of changes at the station, following the exits of other prominent presenters including Mike Nyagwoka and Shaffie Zele. The developments signal a significant restructuring within one of Kenya’s leading radio brands.

During his tenure, Shugaboy rose through the ranks, initially hosting the evening programme Maisha Jioni before transitioning to the highly competitive morning slot. His rise was marked by his engaging personality, humour, and relatable storytelling, which resonated with a wide audience across the country.
One of his most popular segments, Wrong Number, became a fan favourite, contributing to his status as a household name and cementing his influence in Kenya’s radio landscape.
Industry observers note that his move into agriculture and politics reflects a growing trend among media personalities diversifying into business and public service. While details of his political ambitions remain unclear, his strong public profile is expected to play a role in shaping his next chapter.
As he signed off, Shugaboy left listeners with a heartfelt message, “Bye my love Radio Maisha. Tuko mbele pamoja,” a statement that captured both gratitude and optimism for the future.
His exit marks the end of an era for many loyal listeners, who will now have to adjust to a new morning routine without one of the station’s most recognisable voices.
