Robbers Kill Watchman During Nakuru School Attack, Dump Body in a Classroom

Shock and grief have gripped Nakuru following the killing of a school watchman during an alleged robbery at Harambee Khalsa Comprehensive School, where his body was later discovered dumped inside a classroom, authorities and school officials have confirmed.

The body was found on the morning of Thursday, January 8, prompting the immediate suspension of learning activities at the institution as police launched investigations. Images circulating in the media showed bloodstains on the classroom floor where the watchman’s body was discovered, underscoring the brutality of the attack.

Residents from surrounding neighbourhoods, accompanied by the deceased’s family members, gathered at the school as news of the killing spread. Emotions ran high as relatives struggled to come to terms with the loss of a man described as hardworking and devoted to his family.

Speaking to journalists at the scene, the watchman’s son described his father as the sole breadwinner, saying the family had been left devastated by the incident.

“He paid my school fees with the salary from his work at this school until I finished my studies; he would even take loans from the school,” the son said.

He added that his father was still supporting the education of his younger brother, who is currently in Form Four, and was responsible for meeting the family’s basic needs.

“He was paying fees for my brother and taking care of the entire family. Losing him like this is a very big blow to us,” he added.

School officials expressed shock over the incident, questioning the motive behind the attack given that the institution reportedly had no valuable items that could have attracted criminals. The chairperson of the school’s board called on police to conduct a swift and thorough investigation.

“This is a big shock to the school because there was nothing of value here. We are asking the police to take swift action and ensure the culprits are apprehended,” the chairperson said.

According to preliminary reports from school staff, several classrooms and offices had their windows broken, suggesting the attackers forcefully gained entry into multiple sections of the compound. However, it remained unclear what, if anything, was stolen during the raid.

Nakuru East Police Commander Samson Andaje said initial assessments indicate that the killing was not a targeted attack against the watchman but occurred in the course of the alleged break-in.

“The incident was not a targeted thing because an office was broken into, and the scene is currently being analysed to confirm what was stolen,” Andaje said.

The police commander confirmed that detectives and forensic officers were processing the scene and collecting evidence to establish the sequence of events leading to the watchman’s death.

“Investigations are ongoing, and we will pursue all leads to identify and arrest those responsible,” he added.

The killing has reignited concerns over security in learning institutions, particularly during school holidays when many schools operate with minimal staff. Local leaders and residents have called for enhanced security measures to protect non-teaching staff, who are often the first line of defence against criminal activity.

Education stakeholders have also urged school management boards to review safety protocols, including lighting, fencing, and coordination with nearby police posts, to deter criminal gangs.

As the family prepares to lay their loved one to rest, they are appealing for justice, while the wider Nakuru community continues to grapple with the disturbing nature of the crime.
