Kenya is in uproar after a viral video showed fans mocking the national flag following the CAF Champions League clash between Kenya Police FC and Mogadishu City FC. The footage, which sparked fury online, captured two individuals kicking and ridiculing the flag at Nyayo National Stadium.

“You’ve Overstayed Your Welcome”—Murkomen Warns Foreign Offenders

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen didn’t mince words. During a press briefing on Wednesday, September 24, he condemned the act and issued a stern warning.

“When you joke with our symbols of national unity and pride, you have overstayed your welcome,” Murkomen declared.

He confirmed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had launched a probe to identify the culprits. Once found, they will face legal consequences under the Kenya National Flag, Emblems, and Names Act.

“The Inspector General told me they’re assessing the situation,” Murkomen added. “They will find out who it was and why,” he insisted.

Law Is Clear—Desecration Comes With Heavy Penalties

The Kenyan National Flag, Emblems, and Names Act strictly prohibits misuse or disrespect of national symbols. Violators face fines of up to Ksh5,000 or six months in jail. In severe cases, such as unauthorized display on vehicles, penalties can reach Ksh1 million or five years imprisonment.

“The law clearly outlines how to use and respect the flag,” Murkomen emphasized. “Consequences will follow if you violate it,” he warned.

Mogadishu City FC Condemns Fans’ Behavior

In a swift response, Mogadishu City FC distanced itself from the fans involved. The Somali-based club issued a heartfelt apology to Kenyans.

“We strongly condemn this act,” the club stated. “Such behavior has no place in football or friendship,” they added.

The club also urged fans, especially youth, to respect all nations and their symbols.

“We support any appropriate action by Kenyan authorities,” the statement read.

Kenyans Demand Justice and Respect

Online, Kenyans expressed outrage and demanded swift justice. Many called for deportation of the offenders and stricter enforcement of national laws.
