Mixed Reactions as Ida Odinga Lands in Chopper to Pick Daughter at Tom Mboya University

Mama Ida Odinga, wife to ODM leader Raila Odinga, stunned many on Tuesday after arriving in a private helicopter at Tom Mboya University in Homa Bay County.

The Canon of Honour for St Peter’s ACK Nyamira in Bondo was on a mission — to pick up her daughter, Winnie Odinga.

The blue chopper touched down at the university grounds mid-morning. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga was among the first to welcome Ida warmly.

Warm Welcome and Swift Departure

After a brief exchange between the two women leaders, Winnie emerged from the event she had attended earlier.

She walked to the chopper, joined her mother, and moments later, the aircraft lifted into the sky.

Spectators stood at a safe distance after security cleared the landing area. Many did not expect such a dramatic, impromptu visit.

Social Media Buzz and Divided Opinions

Video footage of the scene quickly went viral. The reactions were instant — and deeply divided.

Some Kenyans praised Ida for her display of motherhood.

“Even when children become adults, they often remain ‘a child’ to their mother,” one Kenyan commented.

Others accused the Odinga family of extravagance. They questioned the source of funds for such travel, linking it to alleged misuse of taxpayers’ money.

Winnie’s Visit and Public Debate

Winnie, an East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) member, had been in Homa Bay for the closing ceremony of the Innovate 254 Hackathon. Governor Wanga hosted the event to promote youth innovation.

However, her high-profile exit reignited a long-running public debate about leaders’ use of private choppers during official or semi-official functions.

Criticism from Political Rivals

This is not the first time Kenyan leaders have been criticised for flaunting luxury travel.

Recently, opposition figures called out leaders for what they described as wasteful spending. Deputy Chief Party leader Rigathi Gachagua was blunt in his criticism of government officials who frequently charter helicopters.

“The money he’s flying around in helicopters could fix hospitals and schools. Instead, it’s being thrown around in the name of empowerment. But young people are paying attention,” Gachagua said.

Public Curiosity Still High

For now, Kenyans remain split — some charmed by Ida’s grand gesture, others angered by what they see as needless extravagance.

Either way, the blue chopper’s landing at Tom Mboya University will remain one of the week’s most talked-about moments.
