Hospitality Has Limits, UK Warns

UK Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood delivered a stern warning to foreign offenders.

“If you abuse our hospitality and break our laws, we will send you packing,” she said.

Authorities say some immigrants have taken advantage of a system that allowed them to serve at least half their prison term before deportation.

In June 2025, that threshold dropped to 30 per cent. Now, new legislation allows removal immediately after conviction in certain cases.

Mounting Pressure on UK Prisons

British prisons are nearly full, pushing the government to act.

Running a single prison space costs taxpayers about Ksh9.4 million (£54,000) annually. The UK says cutting the number of foreign national offenders (FNOs) in custody will save money and make streets safer.

Since July 2024, deportations of FNOs have increased by 14 per cent, with over 5,200 foreigners removed in the past year.

Kenya joins 15 other countries on the UK’s “Deport Now, Appeal Later” list.

Others include Uganda, Malaysia, Canada, and India. Under this policy, offenders are removed quickly and can challenge their deportation only after leaving the UK.

The crackdown follows troubling figures. As of this year, foreign nationals make up 12.3 per cent of the prison population in England and Wales — around 10,700 inmates.

Albanians and Irish citizens top the list, but UK officials say Kenyans are now part of a growing concern over cross-border crime.

The UK joins countries like the U.S., which have tightened rules targeting foreign offenders.

In January 2025, more than 1,200 Kenyans in the U.S. received final deportation orders after exhausting legal appeals.

Analysts say these moves reflect a broader shift in immigration enforcement, where governments prioritise swift removal of foreign criminals over lengthy in-country appeals.
