Sudan Accuses Ethiopia of Drone Attacks, Warns of ‘Consequences’

Tensions in the Horn of Africa have escalated after Sudan accused neighboring Ethiopia of launching cross-border drone attacks, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.

In a statement issued on Monday, March 2, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation alleged that it had detected repeated incursions of unmanned aerial vehicles originating from Ethiopian territory throughout February and into early March. According to the ministry, the drones targeted multiple locations inside Sudan, particularly in areas close to the shared border.

“The Government of Sudan has been monitoring throughout February and the beginning of March the entry of drones from within Ethiopian territory targeting locations inside Sudan,” the ministry said, describing the situation as a serious security concern.

Khartoum characterized the alleged actions as a violation of its sovereignty, warning that it could take retaliatory measures if the incidents persist. Sudanese officials framed the attacks as part of a broader pattern of hostility that could further destabilize an already fragile region.

“This hostile behaviour is condemned and rejected and constitutes a blatant violation of Sudanese sovereignty and an outright act of aggression against the Sudanese state,” the statement added.

The ministry went further to caution Addis Ababa against continued involvement, signaling the possibility of escalation if no corrective action is taken. “The Government of Sudan warns the Ethiopian authorities against the consequences of these hostile acts and affirms its right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity by all means necessary to counter such attacks,” the statement read.

The accusations come against the backdrop of Sudan’s ongoing internal conflict, which has entered its third year. The war pits the Sudanese Armed Forces against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with some of the most intense fighting recently reported in the Blue Nile region, near the Ethiopian border.

Sudanese military officials have indicated that they repelled coordinated ground offensives earlier this year in the same region. Following those clashes, authorities claim that aerial attacks intensified, with drones reportedly striking villages and districts close to the frontier. These developments have heightened suspicions within Sudan’s leadership about possible external involvement in the conflict.

Analysts note that if confirmed, the allegations could significantly alter the dynamics of the Sudanese conflict by introducing an interstate dimension. However, as of the time of publication, Ethiopia had not issued an official response to the claims, leaving key questions unanswered and the situation diplomatically sensitive.

The rising tensions also carry implications for Kenya, which maintains diplomatic relations with both Khartoum and Addis Ababa. Nairobi has historically positioned itself as a mediator in regional conflicts, particularly within the Horn of Africa, and may once again find itself under pressure to facilitate dialogue.

Kenya’s involvement in Sudanese affairs has previously drawn scrutiny. In 2025, the country hosted a high-level meeting at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi that brought together individuals linked to the RSF and associated political groups. The Sudanese government strongly criticized the move, accusing Kenya of providing a platform to actors it considers adversarial.

While Kenya has maintained that its role is strictly diplomatic, the latest developments could test its neutrality and influence in the region. Observers warn that any escalation between Sudan and Ethiopia could complicate peace efforts and disrupt stability across East Africa.

As the situation unfolds, regional and international stakeholders are expected to closely monitor developments, with calls likely to grow for restraint, transparency, and dialogue to prevent further deterioration of relations between the two nations.
