Pope Appeals for Prayers and Diplomacy as Violence Escalates in Middle East
Pope Leo XIV has issued an urgent global appeal for peace, calling for restraint and renewed diplomacy following a dramatic escalation of violence in the Middle East that has triggered widespread international concern.
The Pontiff’s remarks come in the wake of a deadly military operation that reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Saturday, February 28, 2026—an घटना that has significantly heightened tensions across the region and raised fears of a broader conflict.
Addressing the crisis, Pope Leo XIV emphasised that lasting peace cannot be achieved through force or intimidation. “Stability and peace are not achieved through mutual threats, nor through the use of weapons, which sow destruction, suffering, and death, but only through reasonable, sincere, and responsible dialogue,” he stated.

The Pope urged all parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint and prioritise dialogue over confrontation. “I make a heartfelt appeal to all the parties involved to assume the moral responsibility of halting the spiral of violence before it becomes an unbridgeable chasm,” he warned, highlighting the urgency of de-escalation efforts.
According to reports, the operation—referred to as Operation Epic Fury by the United States and Roar of the Lion by Israel—targeted key Iranian leadership installations, including the Beit Rahbari compound in central Tehran. The strikes reportedly involved advanced bunker-buster munitions and were aimed at political, military, and nuclear infrastructure.
Casualty figures indicate that more than 200 people were killed, including senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), with hundreds more injured. The scale and precision of the attack have drawn sharp reactions from across the international community.
Iran responded with retaliatory strikes, launching hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones targeting Israeli positions and U.S. military bases across the Gulf region. Countries affected by the strikes reportedly include the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain, further expanding the geographical scope of the conflict.
Amid the escalating hostilities, Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued urgent advisories to its citizens in the affected regions. The government has called on Kenyans residing in countries including Iran, Israel, Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Iraq to exercise extreme caution.
Authorities have also initiated evacuation plans for Kenyan nationals in the most affected areas, particularly Iran and Israel. Citizens have been directed to register with Kenyan embassies to facilitate emergency coordination and assistance.
Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Roseline Njogu urged compliance with the directives, emphasising the importance of preparedness during the rapidly evolving situation. Meanwhile, reports of a missile strike near the Kenyan Embassy in Tel Aviv have heightened concerns about the safety of diplomatic missions.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi also weighed in on the crisis, calling for adherence to international law and established diplomatic frameworks. He urged all parties to pursue peaceful solutions through mechanisms provided under the United Nations Charter.

Analysts warn that the current developments could mark a turning point in Middle Eastern geopolitics, with the potential to draw in additional regional and global actors if tensions are not contained.
In his closing remarks, Pope Leo XIV extended his appeal beyond the Middle East, urging prayers for other conflict-affected regions including Ukraine, Gaza, and Pakistan. He stressed the importance of protecting civilians caught in the crossfire.
“The well-being of ordinary people who simply want to live in peace must be protected,” the Pope said, reinforcing his call for diplomacy to be restored as the primary tool for resolving international disputes.

As the situation continues to evolve, global leaders face mounting pressure to prevent further escalation and to steer the region back from the brink of a wider and more devastating conflict.
