Shame and Justice: Man Fined Ksh8.5M for Using Fake KCSE Certificate to Land Government Job

A Nairobi man who used a forged KCSE certificate to secure a government job has been slapped with a hefty fine of Ksh8.5 million. The Milimani Anti-Corruption Court delivered the ruling on Monday, sending shockwaves through public service circles.

“He Lied for 13 Years” — Clerk Earned Millions Through Fraud

The senior clerk at Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Limited (NCWSC) was hired on November 9, 2011. He used a falsified Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate to get the job.

“The certificate was not issued by KNEC as claimed,” the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) revealed.

For over a decade, he earned Ksh8,243,562 in salaries and benefits. His deception went unnoticed until a whistleblower tipped off the EACC.

“We Investigated Thoroughly” — EACC Exposes the Fraud

After receiving the tip, EACC launched a full investigation. They uncovered the fake certificate and handed the file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

“We found clear evidence of forgery and fraudulent acquisition of public property,” EACC stated.

The ODPP approved prosecution, and the clerk was charged with multiple counts, including forgery, deceiving a principal, and uttering a false document.

“Pay or Serve Time” — Court Issues Harsh Sentence

Magistrate Selesa Okore found the man guilty of all charges. She ordered him to pay a fine equal to the amount he had unlawfully earned.

“He must pay Ksh8,243,562 or serve four years in prison,” the court ruled.

Additionally, he was fined Ksh100,000 each for deceiving a principal and presenting a false certificate. If he fails to pay, he faces two years in prison for each charge.

“All sentences will run concurrently,” Magistrate Okore clarified.

“This Is a Warning” — EACC Welcomes the Judgment

EACC praised the court’s decision, saying it sends a strong message to those using fake documents to access public jobs.

“This judgment is a warning to all who think they can cheat the system,” EACC declared.

They emphasized that such fraud undermines public trust and robs deserving citizens of opportunities.

“Not an Isolated Case” — Fake Degrees Also Under Scrutiny

Earlier this month, another clerk at Nairobi Water was charged with using a fake university degree. She had presented a falsified Bachelor of Commerce certificate, allegedly from the University of Nairobi.

“We are seeing a disturbing trend of forged academic documents in public service,” EACC warned.

They vowed to continue investigations and bring more offenders to justice.

“Integrity Must Prevail” — Public Calls for Accountability

Kenyans have expressed outrage over the revelations. Many are demanding stricter vetting and harsher penalties for fraudsters.

“We need to protect our institutions from imposters,” said a Nairobi resident.

As the crackdown intensifies, the message is clear: fake it, and you’ll pay dearly.
