SGR Hits Full Capacity as Kenya Railways Responds to Calls for More Coaches

Kenya Railways has confirmed that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is operating at full capacity as demand for passenger train services continues to rise.

The corporation made the clarification after travellers called for additional coaches to be introduced to accommodate the growing number of passengers using the railway service, particularly on the busy Nairobi-Mombasa route.

Kenya Railways said it currently does not have additional coaches available to expand the SGR’s passenger capacity.

“We are currently operating at full capacity to meet the growing demand for travel.”

The corporation said any future changes to the number of coaches or the capacity of its services would be communicated through its official communication channels.

“Should there be any changes to the number of coaches or service capacity, the Corporation will communicate the information through its official channels.”

Rising Demand for SGR Travel

The announcement comes as the SGR continues to attract thousands of travellers seeking an alternative to road transport between Nairobi and the Kenyan Coast.

The railway has become an important part of Kenya’s passenger transport network since the launch of the Nairobi-Mombasa passenger service.

Its popularity has been driven by factors including predictable travel times, scheduled departures and the convenience of travelling between major destinations without the delays often associated with road traffic.

The service has also become particularly important during periods when demand for intercity travel increases, including weekends, public holidays and school holidays.

The latest response from Kenya Railways means passengers seeking additional seats may continue to face limited availability during peak travel periods.

Calls for More Coaches

Some passengers have called on Kenya Railways to increase the number of coaches operating on the SGR to accommodate travellers who may struggle to secure seats during busy periods.

The corporation, however, has not announced an immediate plan to introduce additional coaches.

Instead, Kenya Railways maintained that it is currently operating at the available capacity while monitoring demand for its services.

The corporation’s response also indicates that any future expansion of passenger capacity would depend on changes in its fleet or service arrangements.

Passengers have therefore been advised to rely on official Kenya Railways channels for updates regarding schedules, additional coaches and changes to service capacity.

SGR Remains Key Transport Link

The SGR remains one of Kenya’s major investments in modern railway infrastructure and plays an important role in connecting Nairobi with Mombasa.

The passenger service has provided travellers with another option for moving between the capital and the Coast, alongside road and air transport.

The railway has also supported movement between other stations along the route, giving passengers access to destinations in parts of Kajiado, Machakos, Taita Taveta and Mombasa counties.

Growing passenger demand has continued to place attention on the capacity of the service and the availability of seats during peak periods.

For now, Kenya Railways says the SGR is already operating at full capacity, meaning additional coaches will not be immediately available.

The corporation’s position leaves passengers waiting for any future announcement on fleet expansion or increased service capacity as demand for SGR travel continues to grow.

Until then, Kenya Railways has urged travellers to follow its official communication channels for verified information on train schedules and any changes to passenger services.
