Security Officers Bar Former Senator Orwoba From Accessing Senate Chambers

A dramatic scene unfolded outside Parliament on Wednesday morning after former nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba was barred from accessing the Senate chambers.

Locked Out Despite Court Order

Orwoba arrived at Parliament with a court order that reinstated her position. However, security officers at the gates stood firm. They told her they had no instructions to let her in.

Her pleas fell on deaf ears. She was left stranded as proceedings on Kericho Governor Eric Mutai’s impeachment continued inside.

Moments later, she addressed journalists in visible frustration.

“As long as Consolata is sitting in the Senate now, that sitting is unlawful. She is a stranger on the floor of the house. No impeachment is going on with a stranger in the Senate,” Orwoba decried.

Accusations Against Speaker Kingi

The former senator accused Speaker Amason Kingi of violating the Constitution. She claimed Kingi knowingly allowed Consolata Nabwire, the newly nominated senator, to take part in the sitting.

“The Speaker of the Senate, Amason Kingi, continues to entertain lawlessness. The people of Kericho should know that they are being shortchanged because whatever is happening inside the Senate is unlawful,” Orwoba said.

She urged Kericho residents to reject the impeachment process. According to her, the entire hearing was invalid since it was conducted in the presence of “a stranger.”

Tribunal Ruling Ignored

The confrontation came barely a week after the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal ordered the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to reverse all actions taken against Orwoba.

The tribunal faulted UDA’s disciplinary committee, saying it denied Orwoba a fair hearing. In its ruling, the tribunal described the process as politically motivated and full of irregularities.

It further noted that Orwoba was never given access to the committee’s decision, making it impossible for her to appeal.

Political Drama Intensifies

Orwoba’s exclusion from Parliament has now raised questions about the independence of Senate proceedings. Her supporters believe the move was deliberate to silence her voice during a high-stakes impeachment.

The matter has also drawn attention to UDA’s internal wrangles, which continue to expose divisions within the ruling party.

For now, Orwoba remains locked out of Senate, insisting that the impeachment sitting is not only unconstitutional but also a betrayal of Kenyans’ trust.

Whether her legal fight will reinstate her or deepen the standoff remains to be seen.
