Ruto to Sponsor Arsenal and Man United Fans for UK Trip to Watch Live Matches
Football banter turned into a real-life reward after William Ruto pledged to sponsor two Kenyan football supporters to travel to the United Kingdom and watch their favourite English Premier League teams live.
The announcement followed a public interaction with Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, during discussions surrounding the near-completion of Talanta Stadium ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
What began as a conversation about sports infrastructure soon evolved into a light-hearted debate comparing the upcoming Talanta Stadium with iconic football venues including Old Trafford and Emirates Stadium.

Jalang’o challenged the Head of State to reward loyal supporters by sponsoring a Manchester United superfan identified as Masagara to travel and watch his team play at Old Trafford. The President, widely known to be an Arsenal F.C. supporter, initially hesitated but later accepted — on one condition.
“If you accepted that I buy Usefulidioty a ticket since he is an Arsenal fan, I will also sponsor Masagara,” the President said.
The agreement meant that both Masagara, a fan of Manchester United F.C., and popular Arsenal content creator Usefulidioty would receive travel sponsorships to the UK.
The Head of State further elaborated on the arrangement, promising a premium experience.
“I will buy business class tickets and they will also get accommodation. Once they get experience, they will know what goes down at Talanta,” he added.
The pledge immediately attracted attention online, with sports fans praising the gesture as a unique way of connecting with young Kenyans through shared passions such as football.

Talanta Stadium and Youth Engagement
The exchange happened as the government continues to promote Talanta Stadium as a landmark sports facility expected to transform Kenya’s sports scene and host international matches during AFCON 2027.
Officials have repeatedly described the stadium as a project aimed at nurturing local talent and positioning Kenya as a regional sports hub capable of hosting continental tournaments.
Observers note that the President’s engagement with football fans and online creators reflects a broader communication approach targeting younger audiences through relatable and interactive platforms.
Viral Challenges and Online Culture
The sponsorship pledge marks the second time in recent weeks the President has joined viral online trends involving Kenyan content creators.
Earlier, he weighed in on the anticipated amateur boxing bout featuring TikTok personalities “Majembe” and “Mbavu Destroyer,” organised by comedian and media personality Oga Obinna.
At Jalang’o’s request, the President pledged financial support to both contestants and offered to facilitate attendance for thousands of fans.
“We will support the event and ensure young people participate in positive activities,” he said during the engagement.
The boxing match, which began as social media banter, has since evolved into one of the most talked-about youth sporting events in the country.

Public Reaction
Sports enthusiasts and digital commentators have interpreted the football sponsorship as part of a deliberate effort to blend governance messaging with popular culture, particularly football — Kenya’s most widely followed sport.
Whether symbolic or strategic, the pledge has already succeeded in sparking nationwide conversation — not about politics, but about football rivalry and dreams of watching favourite clubs live in Europe.
