Ruto Fires Key Sugar Board Chairs After Controversial Leasing Deal Sparks Uproar
In a Gazette Notice issued Monday, May 12, Ruto revoked the appointments of:
- John Nyambok (Chemelil Sugar),
- Alfred Khang’ati (Nzoia Sugar), and
- Jared Opiyo (South Nyanza Sugar).
The decision took immediate effect.
“Their appointments are revoked forthwith,” the statement read, ending their tenures prematurely.
These sackings come just two years after their appointments. Jared Opiyo was named chair of South Nyanza Sugar in 2023. John Nyambok and Alfred Khang’ati, both former MPs, also had time left in their terms.
Private Takeover Triggers Controversy
The firings followed a controversial leasing deal that handed Chemelil and Muhoroni Sugar Companies to Kibos Sugar and Allied Industries Limited for 30 years.
“Kibos Sugar won the bid after a rigorous, competitive leasing process,” Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe said last Friday.
This move replaced the initial privatisation plan, which had been shelved due to public pressure.
However, the announcement sparked immediate backlash, especially in Bungoma County, where residents and leaders opposed the deal involving Nzoia Sugar Company.
Protests Erupt in Bungoma

“This deal was done behind our backs. We won’t allow it!” a protester shouted.
Police quickly moved in and set up a roadblock at Matisi Bridge, preventing leaders from accessing the company premises.
Among those blocked were:
- Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya,
- Former CS Eugene Wamalwa, and
- Several Members of Parliament.
Governor Natembeya Speaks Out
Just a day before the protest, Governor Natembeya addressed the issue during a church service in his county.
“I’ll march to Nzoia Sugar myself. Kenyans must know why our factory and PanPaper Mills were sold,” he declared.
Now, questions remain. Was the leasing process fair? Will these changes benefit local farmers or deepen sugar sector woes?

While the government insists this is part of reforms, communities feel betrayed. The president’s axe on board members may only be the beginning of a deeper battle over Kenya’s sugar future.
