Ruto Denies US Deportation Deal: “We Have No Such Requests”

President William Ruto has firmly denied claims that Kenya is part of a deal with the United States to accept deported illegal immigrants. Speaking during an interview at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Ruto dismissed the allegations as unfounded and misleading.

“We Have No Such Requests”—Ruto Sets the Record Straight

While responding to a France 24 journalist, Ruto clarified that Kenya had not received any formal request from the US government.

“We have no such requests,” Ruto stated. “No formal approach has been made regarding that matter,” he added.

He emphasized that any future request would be handled strictly within the framework of Kenyan law.

“If we were to get a request from the US government, that has to be in line with the Kenyan law,” Ruto reiterated.

Kenya Maintains Neutrality Amid Rising Speculation

The President’s remarks come amid growing speculation, especially after the US signed similar deals with Ghana, Rwanda, South Sudan, and most recently, Uganda. These agreements allow the US to deport illegal immigrants to those countries.

“Kenya’s position is clear. We are not part of any such arrangement,” Ruto affirmed.

He stressed that Kenya’s immigration policies are guided by legal justification and national interest—not external pressure.

Uganda’s Deal Sparks Mixed Reactions Across Africa

Just two weeks ago, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni approved a deal to accept deported immigrants from the US. The move triggered mixed reactions, especially since Uganda already hosts the largest refugee population in Africa.

However, Uganda placed strict conditions on the deal. Individuals with criminal records and unaccompanied minors would not be accepted.

“Uganda also prefers that individuals from African countries shall be the ones transferred to Uganda,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry stated.

Ruto Calls for Responsible Dialogue on Migration

Ruto urged global leaders to approach migration issues with fairness and transparency. He warned against politicizing the plight of immigrants.

“We must treat migration with dignity and respect,” he said. “Kenya will always act in accordance with its laws and values,” he added.

As the debate continues, Kenya remains firm in its stance—no deal, no request, and no compromise on sovereignty.
