“The Government has today issued a special gazette notice waiving the fees charged for the replacement of IDs and changing of particulars for a period of six months,” Murkomen stated.

President William Ruto had earlier emphasized the importance of removing obstacles to voter registration and national documentation.
“We will ensure no one is denied the opportunity to register as a voter because they lack an identification card,” Ruto said on October 28.

“Confusion Clouds Rollout” — Huduma Kenya Contradicts Directive
Despite the announcement, confusion emerged on Wednesday when Huduma Kenya dismissed reports of the fee suspension. Their statement contradicted Ruto’s directive, sparking public concern.
“There is no official communication regarding the waiver of the Ksh1,000 replacement fee,” a Huduma official claimed.
This contradiction raised questions about coordination between government agencies and the clarity of implementation.

“We’ve seen these changes before. Let’s hope this time it sticks,” said a Nairobi resident.
