Radio Citizen Presenter Tina Ogal Joins ODM, Expresses Interest in Embakasi East MP Seat
Veteran broadcaster Tina Ogal has formally stepped into the political arena after joining the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), signalling her intention to contest for the Embakasi East parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.
Ogal, a long-serving presenter at Royal Media Services, was unveiled as one of the party’s newest recruits during an event held on Tuesday, April 28, presided over by ODM Secretary-General Catherine Omanyo. Her declaration introduces a fresh dynamic into the Embakasi East race, currently represented by Babu Owino.
In a statement following the event, the party confirmed her political ambitions, noting: “Veteran radio presenter Tina Ogal joined the party and expressed interest in the Embakasi East Parliamentary seat.”

Ogal’s entry into politics comes after more than two decades in the media industry, where she built a reputation as a commanding voice on radio, particularly through her work at Radio Citizen. Known for her eloquence in Kiswahili and ability to engage audiences on social and national issues, she has remained a prominent figure in Kenya’s broadcasting landscape since joining the station in 2004.
Her professional journey has seen her rise through the ranks within Royal Media Services, at one point serving as Acting Head of Radio following the departure of senior journalist Jeridah Andayi. Colleagues describe her as disciplined, articulate, and deeply connected to grassroots audiences—qualities that analysts say could influence her political appeal.
“My journey has always been about engaging with people, listening to their concerns, and telling their stories. I now want to take that commitment a step further,” Ogal said during the event, hinting at her motivation to transition into public service.

Ogal joins a growing list of aspirants being recruited by ODM as part of its strategy to rejuvenate its ranks and strengthen its grassroots networks. Among those unveiled alongside her were Bayamin Mahat, who declared interest in the Waberi Ward seat in Garissa County, and Bobby Onunga, eyeing the Embakasi Ward position in Nairobi.
Speaking at the event, Omanyo emphasised the party’s commitment to inclusivity and democratic participation. “We are committed to opening a democratic space that will encourage as many people as possible to join the party,” she stated, underscoring ODM’s push to attract professionals and community leaders into its fold.
Political analysts suggest that Ogal’s candidacy could reshape voter dynamics in Embakasi East, particularly among younger and urban voters who are familiar with her media presence. However, they also caution that transitioning from media to politics presents its own challenges, including navigating party structures and addressing constituency-specific issues.
For Ogal, the journey ahead will involve building a strong grassroots network, articulating a clear policy agenda, and positioning herself within a competitive political environment. Her campaign is expected to focus on issues affecting urban constituencies, including youth empowerment, service delivery, and community development.
“Leadership is about service, accountability, and delivering real change to the people,” she added, outlining her vision as she embarks on her political path.
