President Ruto Mourns Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu
President William Ruto has joined the Zambian people in mourning former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, who passed away on Thursday, June 5.
Lungu, 68, died while undergoing specialised treatment in Pretoria, South Africa, according to his party, the Patriotic Front (PF). His exact illness remains undisclosed.
President Ruto’s Heartfelt Tribute
Through a statement shared on X, Ruto honored Lungu as a visionary who gave his all in service of his people.
“Our condolences to the family and the people of Zambia for the untimely death of Former President Edgar Lungu,” the message read.
He went further, praising Lungu’s dedication and commitment.
“President Lungu was a progressive and outstanding leader who served the people of Zambia with zeal and commitment,” he added.
“May God grant the people of Zambia strength and comfort during this painful time. Rest In Peace.”
Family’s Final Moments and Grief
His daughter shared a moving video tribute, revealing that Lungu had been under medical supervision for weeks.
“In this moment of grief, we invoke the spirit of ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ – the timeless creed that guided President Lungu’s service to our country,” she shared.
Lungu reportedly passed away at 6:00 am in a Pretoria clinic, surrounded by close family members.

A Controversial Yet Impactful Legacy
Edgar Lungu ruled Zambia from 2015 to 2021, a period marked by both development and controversy.
In 2021, he lost to the current president Hakainde Hichilema in a decisive election. Following his defeat, he briefly stepped away from politics but later returned with a bold, outspoken opposition stance.
He made it clear he wanted to run again for the presidency. However, the Constitutional Court barred him in 2024, citing the two-term constitutional limit.
Health Struggles and Past Surgeries
Years before his death, Lungu had undergone throat surgery abroad due to a condition known as oesophageal stricture (narrowing of the oesophagus).

Though this condition wasn’t confirmed as the cause of death, his health had been a concern in recent months.
Ruto Stands With Zambia
President Ruto’s tribute underlines Kenya’s strong bond with Zambia. As Zambia mourns, Africa remembers a leader who left a complex but lasting impact.
