Police Launch Probe After 15-Year-Old Boy Collapses, Dies While Playing at School
The incident occurred at Saye Mixes Secondary School, where the Form Two student was reportedly taking part in outdoor games with fellow learners when he suddenly collapsed on the school field. Teachers and students at the scene raised alarm, prompting an emergency response to save his life.
According to police, the boy was rushed to a nearby health facility for urgent medical attention. However, doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Confirming the incident, Homa Bay County police officials said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over the case to establish the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death.
“The student collapsed while playing within the school compound and was rushed to hospital, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead on arrival,” police said.
Authorities noted that preliminary information indicates the boy had not reported any known medical condition prior to the incident. However, investigators say only a postmortem examination will provide clarity on what caused the sudden collapse.
“At this stage, we cannot speculate on the cause of death. An autopsy will be conducted to determine whether there were underlying medical issues or any other factors involved,” police added.
The body was later moved to a local mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination. School administrators have also been asked to record statements as part of the ongoing probe.
The incident has shocked the local community, with parents and education stakeholders calling for heightened health monitoring in schools, especially during physical activities. Some parents who spoke after the incident urged schools to ensure students undergo regular medical check-ups.
“This is heartbreaking. Our children spend most of their time in school, and we hope stronger measures can be put in place to prevent such tragedies,” said one concerned parent.
Sudden deaths during routine activities have increasingly raised concern across the country. Just a month ago, the media industry was thrown into mourning following the death of Standard Group journalist Rashid Mukoya, who collapsed at the media house’s offices in Nairobi.

Mukoya was rushed to hospital after collapsing at work but was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment on Wednesday, December 25, according to his family. To date, the exact cause of his death remains unclear, with no confirmation on whether a pre-existing medical condition may have contributed to the incident.
Mukoya joined the Standard Group in 2013 and rose through the ranks to become a senior videographer in the editorial department. In a statement, the media house described him as a dedicated professional who played a significant role in strengthening visual storytelling across its platforms.
“In the past decade, Rashid was instrumental in elevating the quality of visual journalism at the Standard Group,” the company said.
Among his notable career achievements was winning the 2016 CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year Award alongside journalist Asha Mwilu, an accolade that cemented his legacy in African journalism.
As investigations into the death of the Homa Bay student continue, authorities have urged the public to remain calm and allow due process, reiterating that findings from the autopsy will guide the next steps.
