Panic at Moi International Airport as Emergency Teams Rush In Following Aircraft Incident
There was panic and confusion on Wednesday morning, August 5, after emergency teams were deployed at Moi International Airport in Mombasa following a reported aircraft incident.
According to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), first responders quickly moved to the scene to handle the situation.
“Airport emergency services are currently responding to an incident involving an aircraft at Moi International Airport,”
“The situation is being managed by first responders,”
read a brief statement by KAA.
However, it was since learned that the incident was not an actual emergency but a planned emergency drill by aviation authorities. The exercise was meant to assess how swiftly and effectively teams can respond to real-life airport crises.

“We conduct these drills regularly to test our response systems and identify areas for improvement,”
said a senior KAA official who requested anonymity.
Emergency drills simulate critical situations such as plane crashes, fires, and security breaches. These exercises are vital in preparing airport staff, security agencies, medical teams, and government responders to handle emergencies efficiently.
“These tests are essential for maintaining operational safety. They help expose weaknesses we can work on,”
another official confirmed.
Despite reassurances, the incident stirred memories of previous disruptions at the same airport. In September 2024, operations came to a standstill after airport workers held demonstrations inside the facility.

“That time, we were left stranded for hours with no explanation,”
recalled a traveler, frustrated by the lack of communication.
During the September standoff, security personnel had to intervene to restore calm, and passengers experienced extended waiting times.
“Why not notify the public before these exercises? We panicked thinking it was a real emergency,”
wrote one X (formerly Twitter) user.
KAA has promised to provide full details once all internal evaluations are completed.

“We urge the public to follow our official communication channels for accurate information,”
the agency stated.ALSO READ: Former MCA Aspirant Shot Dead After Dramatic Escape Attempt
