Oburu Oginga’s 83rd Birthday Photos Emerge After Weeks of Health Speculation

Orange Democratic Party (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga has appeared in new photographs celebrating his 83rd birthday, offering a glimpse of the veteran politician after weeks of speculation about his health.

The images show the Siaya senator celebrating with his two wives and a group of Nairobi Hospital staff during an intimate cake-cutting ceremony on Thursday, October 15.

The photographs emerged amid reports that Oburu had been unwell and had missed several public engagements, prompting concerns among supporters and members of the ODM fraternity.

His family and secretariat have previously dismissed reports claiming that his condition had deteriorated or that he had died, urging the public to disregard unverified information circulating online.

Oburu Marks Birthday on Day Raila Died

Oburu’s birthday carries an emotional significance this year because it falls on the same date his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, died in 2025.

In a message accompanying the birthday celebrations, the senator reflected on the coincidence, describing the day as a mixture of personal gratitude and grief over the loss of his brother.

“Today, October 15, is far more than just a date on the calendar, it is a sacred intersection of life and eternity. Marking another year of my own birth on this very day brings a bittersweet reflection, knowing it is also the date my beloved younger brother, Baba Raila Amolo Odinga, departed to be with the Lord,” a statement from Oburu read.

The message combined the celebration of another year of life with a tribute to Raila, whose death marked a major moment in Kenya’s political history.

Oburu’s photographs also offered supporters an opportunity to see him following the uncertainty surrounding his recent absence from public events.

However, the images alone do not provide a detailed medical update on his condition.

ODM Leader’s Health Raises Questions

In recent weeks, reports emerged that Oburu had travelled to the United Kingdom for treatment of an undisclosed medical condition before returning to Kenya.

He was subsequently reported to be receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital.

His absence from several public engagements fuelled speculation about his wellbeing, with unverified claims about his condition circulating on social media.

On Tuesday, October 6, Oburu’s secretariat dismissed reports alleging that the senator had died, describing them as malicious propaganda and fake news.

The secretariat urged Kenyans to rely on credible information rather than share unconfirmed claims about the ODM leader.

The latest birthday photographs come against that backdrop, although they do not establish the precise nature of his medical condition or the stage of his recovery.

Oburu Thanks Nairobi Hospital Staff

In his birthday message, the senator expressed gratitude to the medical staff who had attended to him, praising their professionalism and kindness.

He also acknowledged members of the ODM fraternity for standing with his family during the period of concern surrounding his health.

“Thank you to the dedicated Nairobi Hospital staff for your exceptional professionalism and kindness, and to the ODM fraternity, wonderfully represented today by Trustee Elder Joshua Kawino, for standing steadfastly with our family,” he said.

The message highlighted the support he said he had received from hospital staff and political allies during the period.

Birthday Message Brings Relief to Supporters

Oburu’s appearance comes at a sensitive time for ODM, which continues to navigate life after Raila’s death while maintaining its political activities.

As one of the senior figures associated with the Odinga family and the party, the senator’s health has attracted public attention, particularly following his recent absence from the political scene.

The birthday message and photographs may reassure supporters who have been seeking updates about his wellbeing.

Nevertheless, questions about his medical condition remain unanswered, and no detailed medical report was included in the birthday statement.

For now, Oburu’s 83rd birthday has combined a personal milestone with a solemn remembrance of Raila, whose death continues to shape the family’s reflections and the wider political landscape.
