Nyandiwa Hospital Ksh20 Million Scandal: Residents, CS Duale and SHA Boss Trade Blame

Fresh controversy has erupted in Homa Bay after revelations that Nyandiwa Level 4 Hospital allegedly received Ksh20 million despite being non-operational.

Shock Among Residents

Locals expressed outrage after learning that funds had been allocated to a hospital they claim has never opened its doors.

“That is a surprise and breaking news to me. It is very concerning that the hospital is receiving funds, yet we have never seen the hospital working. This is a waste project,” a resident lamented.

Others pleaded with the government to finally make the facility operational.

“What I can tell the government is, open the hospital so that it can now start operating. It can be very beneficial to us who live near it,” another resident urged.

The community has reportedly waited over a decade to see the hospital function. Instead, many still travel long distances to Rachuonyo for basic medical care.

Ksh20 Million Sparks Uproar

The uproar began after the Social Health Authority (SHA) released its August 2025 disbursement list. Kenyans quickly noted that Nyandiwa Hospital had been listed among facilities that received Ksh20 million.

Photos and videos shared online appeared to show the facility abandoned and unused. This fueled suspicion about possible mismanagement of funds.

Mwangangi Defends SHA

SHA CEO Mercy Mwangangi strongly dismissed the claims.

“The Social Health Authority has noted with concern a misleading article alleging that SHA disbursed Ksh20 million to a ghost facility. These claims are false, misleading, and undermine basic principles of responsible journalism, such as accuracy, fairness, and balance,” Mwangangi stated.

She maintained that the hospital had been operational since the 1970s and that SHA funding followed strict procedures.

Duale Contradicts

However, Health CS Aden Duale appeared to contradict her, admitting that the inclusion of Nyandiwa Hospital on the list may have been a mistake. His remarks sparked confusion and further fueled public anger.

Meanwhile, the Rural and Urban Private Hospitals Association, which has long accused SHA of failing to meet its obligations, weighed in.

“These gaps in SHA are among many examples of its failures,” the association alleged.

Questions Linger

As the conflicting statements continue, locals remain uncertain about the truth. Residents insist the hospital is a ghost facility, while SHA stands by its position.
