Nigeria Under Fire for Denying Visas to Kenyans Despite Visa-Free Access

Diplomatic tensions are rising between Nigeria and Kenya after reports emerged that Kenyan citizens are being denied Nigerian visas despite Nigerians enjoying visa-free entry into Kenya. The controversy has ignited debate over reciprocity in travel policies across Africa and prompted calls for government intervention.

The dispute escalated on Tuesday after prominent Kenyan journalist Larry Madowo publicly disclosed difficulties he encountered while attempting to enter Nigeria. His account quickly drew attention online, with many Kenyans sharing similar experiences and questioning what they describe as an uneven diplomatic arrangement.

According to Madowo, Kenyan applicants are required to submit extensive documentation and pay non-refundable fees, only to face frequent rejections without detailed justification.

“Kenyans are being denied visas even after meeting all application requirements, including submitting travel documents and paying the required fees,” he said, describing the process as costly and uncertain.

Costly Process With Uncertain Outcomes

Applicants reportedly pay approximately KSh10,332 (about USD 80), covering visa charges, online processing fees, and third-party payment costs. Despite completing these steps, some receive rejection notices citing provisions of Nigeria’s immigration laws without specific explanations.

A sample refusal letter circulating online indicates that decisions are final and that application fees are non-refundable, a policy that has intensified frustration among affected travelers.

Critics argue that such practices undermine efforts to promote intra-African mobility, trade, and cultural exchange—key pillars of continental integration initiatives.

Kenya’s Visa-Free Policy in Spotlight

The controversy has drawn attention to Kenya’s own liberal entry rules for African nationals. In July last year, Kenya scrapped Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) requirements for most African countries, allowing citizens to enter without prior approval.

Under this framework, Nigerians can travel to Kenya visa-free and may even extend their stay, a privilege now cited by critics as evidence of diplomatic imbalance.

“While Nigerians can travel to Kenya without visas, Kenyans must go through a costly and uncertain process to access Nigeria,” Madowo noted, underscoring what many see as a lack of reciprocity.

Calls for Retaliatory Measures

The issue has triggered intense debate on social media and among policy commentators, with some urging Nairobi to introduce reciprocal restrictions on Nigerian passport holders.

Proponents of this approach argue that equal treatment is essential to maintaining fair bilateral relations, while others caution that retaliatory measures could strain diplomatic ties and disrupt business and tourism flows between the two countries.

A Nigerian academic participating in the online debate suggested that Kenya should impose matching visa requirements to encourage Nigeria to review its current policy.

Broader Implications for African Integration

The dispute comes at a time when African governments are increasingly promoting easier cross-border movement to support trade under frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Restrictions on travel, analysts say, risk undermining these ambitions.

Kenya and Nigeria are among Africa’s largest economies and play influential roles in regional diplomacy. Any prolonged disagreement could have ripple effects beyond travel, potentially affecting business partnerships, educational exchanges, and cultural cooperation.

Awaiting Official Response

As of Tuesday evening, neither government had issued a comprehensive statement addressing the controversy. However, pressure is mounting on both sides to clarify visa policies and restore confidence among travelers.

For many Kenyans hoping to visit Nigeria for business, tourism, or professional engagements, the uncertainty remains a significant obstacle.

Unless resolved, observers warn that the dispute could evolve into a broader diplomatic standoff, testing the commitment of African nations to the principle of open borders within the continent.

For now, the issue has become a flashpoint in discussions about fairness, sovereignty, and the future of intra-African mobility.
