CS Wandayi to Hold Emergency Meeting With Oil Marketers Amid Concerns of Fuel Shortage

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Opiyo Wandayi has announced plans to convene an emergency meeting with oil marketing companies amid growing public concern over a possible fuel shortage.

The meeting comes just hours after the CS held discussions with international oil suppliers participating in Kenya’s government-to-government (G-2-G) fuel supply agreement, as the country closely monitors developments in the Middle East that could disrupt global energy supply chains.

Speaking on March 10 during the official listing of Kenya Pipeline Company at the Nairobi Securities Exchange, Wandayi assured Kenyans that the government was actively working to safeguard the country’s fuel supply.

The CS said the government continues to maintain close coordination with international suppliers under the G-2-G arrangement to ensure Kenya has sufficient petroleum reserves.

“We continue to engage very closely with our government-to-government suppliers, that is, Saudi Aramco, ADNOC and ENOC, in terms of contingency planning,” Wandayi said.

The suppliers referenced by the CS include Saudi Aramco, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC), which have been supplying petroleum products to Kenya under the long-term arrangement aimed at stabilising fuel availability and prices.

Wandayi emphasized that contingency plans were already in place to mitigate any potential disruptions that could arise due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

“For that reason, there is really no cause for alarm. In the short to medium term, we have security of supply, and we continue to monitor the situation very closely,” he added.

The assurances come amid heightened geopolitical tensions following developments around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime passage through which nearly 21 percent of the world’s oil supply passes daily.

Reports indicate that Iran has threatened to close the strategic waterway as the conflict in the region intensifies, raising concerns about potential disruptions to global oil shipments.

Kenya, like many countries around the world, is closely tracking the developments due to its heavy reliance on imported petroleum products.

Authorities are also monitoring a tanker carrying fuel from the Middle East that is expected to supply the Kenyan market.

According to Daniel Kiptoo, the government is tracking the loading of fuel scheduled to take place in the Red Sea on Friday, March 13.

While the specific vessel was not identified, Kiptoo confirmed that the shipment is expected to arrive along the Kenyan coast by early April.

The monitoring is part of precautionary measures by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority to ensure that fuel supply chains remain uninterrupted despite rising geopolitical risks.

Officials say some vessels transporting oil have already begun taking longer and more expensive alternative routes due to security concerns, potentially affecting global fuel distribution networks.

Kenya’s reliance on imported petroleum products makes the country particularly vulnerable to such disruptions. Although African nations like Nigeria produce large volumes of crude oil, many countries on the continent lack sufficient refining capacity and therefore depend on imports of refined petroleum products.

Last year, Kenya renewed its long-term supply agreements with Saudi Aramco, ENOC, and ADNOC to guarantee stable fuel supplies and protect the local market from international price volatility.

Meanwhile, global energy markets continue to react to the escalating conflict in the region.

According to reports by the Financial Times, Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi warned earlier this month that the conflict could eventually force Persian Gulf producers to suspend energy exports if the situation deteriorates further.

Back home, Kenyan motorists and businesses are awaiting the next fuel price review from EPRA, expected to be announced on Saturday, March 14.
