Nairobi Braces for Grand Bike Race as Major Highways Face Sunday Closure

Nairobi is gearing up for the thrilling Grand Nairobi Bike Race, set to take place on Sunday, October 5, 2025. However, excitement comes with disruption, as several major highways will be temporarily closed to accommodate the event.

“Expect Closures from Midnight”—Authorities Warn Motorists

Although the National Police Service and NTSA have yet to issue final updates, organizers confirmed that road closures will begin at midnight on Saturday.

“We expect full cooperation from motorists and residents,” said one race official. “Safety and smooth flow are our top priorities,” he added.

Langata Road, Uhuru Highway, Bunyala Road, and Haile Selassie Avenue are among the roads expected to be affected.

“Over 3,500 Cyclists Coming”—Race Draws Global Attention

This year’s edition will attract more than 3,500 cyclists from over 20 countries. The main race will kick off at 6am from Nyayo Stadium.

“We’re proud to host athletes from across East Africa and beyond,” said the event coordinator. “This race celebrates unity, endurance, and community spirit,” he added.

The race will wind through iconic Nairobi landmarks including Uhuru Gardens, Wilson Airport, Upper Hill, and parts of the CBD.

“Ksh4 Million Up for Grabs”—Prize Money Sparks Fierce Competition

Organizers revealed that the winner of the 2025 race will walk away with a grand prize of Ksh4 million.

“We’ve increased the prize to motivate excellence,” said the sponsor’s representative. “Last year’s winner took home Ksh3 million,” he noted.

With such high stakes, competition is expected to be intense and emotional.

“Fun for All Ages”—Event Includes Family and Kiddie Races

The Grand Nairobi Bike Race isn’t just for professionals. It features a 75km Main Race, 45km Black Mamba and Para-Cycling Races, a 15km Family Fun Ride, and a Kiddie Race.

“We want everyone to feel included,” said a volunteer. “From toddlers to seasoned cyclists, there’s something for everyone,” she added.

The event, first launched in 2021, has grown rapidly, drawing participants from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Burundi.

As Nairobi prepares for the spectacle, residents are urged to plan ahead and avoid affected routes.

“We advise early travel or alternative routes,” NTSA said. “Let’s support this great event while staying safe,” they added.
