Chaos in Kitui: Speaker Suspends 11 MCAs Behind His Impeachment Motion

Tensions have erupted in Kitui County after Speaker Kevin Katisya suspended 11 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) who backed his impeachment. The dramatic move has sparked outrage, confusion, and a fierce political standoff.

“This Is Misconduct”—Speaker Defends 90-Day Suspension

On Thursday, October 2, Katisya suspended Matinyani MCA Sylvester Munyalo and 10 others for alleged gross misconduct. He claimed their actions disrupted proceedings and undermined the dignity of the Assembly.

“Their behavior has caused unnecessary chaos,” Katisya declared. “We must protect the integrity of this House,” he added.

The suspension effectively stalls the impeachment motion, which had gained traction after 31 MCAs signed in support.

“We’re Not Backing Down”—Munyalo Rejects Suspension

In a fiery response, Munyalo dismissed the Speaker’s decision as unlawful. He vowed to continue pushing for Katisya’s removal.

“The speaker’s decision to read our names, claiming we are suspended, is of no consequence,” Munyalo said. “Expect all of us in the Assembly when sittings resume next week on Tuesday,” he added.

He argued that suspension must follow a hearing before the privilege committee, which had not occurred.

“Impeachment Bid in Limbo”—Motion Faces Legal and Political Hurdles

The impeachment motion accuses Katisya of abuse of office, constitutional violations, and conflict of interest. However, the suspension has thrown the process into uncertainty.

“Motions are bound by time,” a legal expert explained. “Delays could invalidate the entire process,” he warned.

Now, both camps are digging in, setting the stage for a heated showdown.

“Kericho Chaos Still Fresh”—MCAs Suspended for Violence

The Kitui drama follows a similar incident in Kericho last month. Four MCAs were suspended after CCTV captured them stoning Governor Eric Mutai’s office during his impeachment process.

“They smashed windows and destroyed property,” a county official said. “The footage was shocking,” he added.

The MCAs were banned from Assembly proceedings for 90 days.

“Assembly Under Fire”—Public Demands Accountability

As political battles intensify, citizens are demanding transparency and discipline from their leaders.

“We elected them to serve, not fight,” said a Kitui resident. “This drama must end,” another added.
