Mediheal Hospital: Duale Suspends 2 Govt Officials, Halts Transplants Amid Kidney Harvesting Scandal
This follows serious allegations of malpractice and shocking ethical breaches in transplant procedures—particularly at Mediheal’s Eldoret branch. Duale made the announcement on April 17 during a fiery press briefing at Afya House.
“These actions are critical to restore public trust and ensure patient safety,” he declared.
High-Level Probe Underway
To investigate the scandal thoroughly, Duale announced the formation of an Independent Expert Committee.
This committee will audit kidney transplants carried out at Mediheal over the last five years. It will assess clinical practices, ethical standards, and patient safety protocols. The findings are expected in 90 days.
“We must ensure no stone is left unturned,” said Duale.
In addition, Duale suspended Dr. Maurice Wakwabubi, Acting Head of the Kenya Blood Transfusion and Transplant Services (KBTTS), and Dr. Everlyne Chege, who led a previous internal probe in December 2023.
“Their suspensions will remove any conflict of interest. The goal is a fair and transparent investigation,” he explained.
Dr. Martin Sirengo, a Senior Deputy Director of Medical Services, will now oversee KBTTS operations.

Crackdown on Foreign Doctors
The scandal triggered sweeping changes beyond Mediheal. Duale directed the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) to stop registering new foreign doctors, unless they are from East African Community countries.
He also ordered a 90-day audit of all licensed foreign practitioners.
“We must raise oversight and match global medical standards,” he said.

Health Ministry United on Reform
Duale was flanked by top health officials, including:
- PS Mary Muthoni (Public Health)
- Dr. Ouma Oluga (Medical Services)
- Dr. Patrick Amoth (Director General of Health)
Together, they pledged to defend patient rights and enforce the highest standards of medical ethics.
“This isn’t just about Mediheal. It’s about the integrity of Kenya’s entire healthcare system,” Duale stressed.
