Matt Baugh Appointed British High Commissioner to Kenya 7 Months After Neil Wigan’s Exit

The United Kingdom has appointed seasoned diplomat Matt Baugh as its new High Commissioner to Kenya, ending an extended period during which the position remained vacant following the departure of Neil Wigan.

In an official announcement, the UK government confirmed that Baugh will succeed Wigan, who concluded his tour of duty in August 2025 and has since taken up another diplomatic assignment.

“Mr Matt Baugh OBE has been appointed British High Commissioner to the Republic of Kenya… Mr Baugh will take up his appointment during April 2026,” the statement read.

The appointment comes after nearly eight months during which the UK’s diplomatic mission in Nairobi was led by Ed Barnett in an acting capacity. Barnett simultaneously served as the United Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN-Habitat.

Baugh’s posting is expected to formally commence later this month, subject to the presentation and acceptance of his credentials by President William Ruto.

Kenya’s Foreign Affairs leadership has already signalled its readiness to work with the incoming envoy. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei welcomed the appointment, describing it as a positive step in strengthening bilateral relations between Nairobi and London.

Baugh brings with him extensive experience in international diplomacy, security, and conflict management, having held several senior roles within the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Most recently, he served as Director for Migration and Conflict from 2024 to 2025, a role that placed him at the centre of global policy coordination on displacement and crisis response.

Prior to that, he was Director for Euro-Atlantic Security between 2022 and 2024, where he oversaw strategic policy on defence and transatlantic relations. His career also includes a posting in Brussels, where he represented the UK as Ambassador to the EU Political and Security Committee and later served as Director of Political and Security Affairs at the UK Mission to the European Union.

Baugh’s diplomatic background also features significant engagement with Africa. Between 2010 and 2013, he served as the UK’s Ambassador to Somalia, gaining firsthand experience in regional security and post-conflict reconstruction efforts.

His earlier roles include Deputy Director for Africa at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and senior leadership positions within the Department for International Development (DFID), where he worked on crisis response initiatives in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kosovo.

“Mr Baugh’s experience spans Africa and crisis management, reflecting a strong background in handling complex international challenges,” the UK government noted.

He began his career in public service through the Ministry of Defence and DFID fast stream programmes in the late 1990s, steadily rising through the ranks to become one of the UK’s senior diplomatic figures.

The appointment comes shortly after Kenya made its own diplomatic changes in London. President Ruto recently named Maurice Makoloo as Kenya’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Makoloo officially presented his credentials to King Charles III in February 2026.

Diplomatic observers view the near-simultaneous appointments as a sign of renewed momentum in Kenya-UK relations, particularly in areas such as trade, security cooperation, climate action, and development partnerships.

As Baugh prepares to assume office in Nairobi, attention will turn to how his experience—particularly in security and migration—will shape the UK’s engagement with Kenya and the wider East African region.

His tenure is expected to play a key role in advancing bilateral priorities while navigating evolving geopolitical dynamics, reinforcing the longstanding ties between the two nations
