Margaret Nduta: Musalia Mudavadi Speaks About Fate of Kenyan Woman Facing Execution in Vietnam

Nairobi – The fate of Margaret Macharia Nduta, a Kenyan woman facing execution in Vietnam, remains uncertain. The government, through Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, is working tirelessly to negotiate clemency.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, March 19, Mudavadi assured Kenyans that diplomatic efforts were ongoing. “Unfortunately, a Kenyan is facing this situation. It is not pleasant, and we have been engaging Vietnam to seek mitigation,” he said.

High Stakes in Diplomatic Talks

Vietnam’s strict anti-drug laws make Nduta’s case complicated. Mudavadi revealed that Kenya had received official documents on her charges but was still awaiting Vietnam’s final response.

“We are not arguing about guilt or innocence,” he clarified. “Once you enter another country, their laws take precedence. However, we are pleading for clemency.”

If successful, the plea could commute Nduta’s death sentence to life imprisonment or a lesser penalty.

Why Clemency May Be Hard to Achieve Foreign policy expert Mwangi Maina cast doubt on the success of Kenya’s appeal. “Vietnam rarely grants clemency in drug-related cases. Their legal system enforces some of the world’s harshest anti-narcotics laws,” he stated.

Kenya’s limited diplomatic ties with Vietnam further complicate negotiations. The two nations lack embassies in each other’s capitals, reducing Kenya’s influence in the discussions.

Family and Nation Hold Their Breath Back home, Nduta’s family remains hopeful. They have held prayer meetings, urging the government to intensify efforts. Kenyans on social media have also rallied behind her, calling for urgent action.

Mudavadi reassured them that the government was exhausting all options. “We hope for a breakthrough soon. We must give her a chance to live,” he affirmed.

As the world watches, Nduta’s fate now lies in Vietnam’s hands.
