KUPPET Demands Automatic Promotions for Long-Stagnated Teachers
Speaking on Monday, August 11, KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori urged the commission to take bold action.
“We commend the National Police Service for announcing promotions for police officers who have been stuck in a single job group for more than 10 years. Under the policy by the service, the service will see the promotion of police officers without the declaration of vacancies or interviews,” Misori said.
He insisted that teachers deserve the same courtesy, without the lengthy and competitive interview process.
Teachers “Already Qualified” for Promotion
Misori argued that teachers who have served diligently for years already possess the skills and experience to rise in rank.
He added that waiting for advertised vacancies or interviews only delays their career growth and demoralizes the profession.

Deputy Secretary General Moses Nthurima echoed these sentiments.
“When a government singles out a sector for employment and rewards them with summary promotion, it is curious. It is good that they have promoted police who have stagnated in one job group for more than 10 years, but what about teachers?” Nthurima posed.
Police Officers Get Automatic Promotions
The union’s criticism came just days after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen lowered the automatic promotion age for long-serving police officers from 53 to 50 years.
According to Murkomen, police officers who have served as a corporal, sergeant, or constable for more than 15 years and reached age 50 will be promoted automatically.

Inspectors who have held their rank for over 10 years and reached age 50 will also benefit.
“The promotion board sat down yesterday and agreed that if a police officer is 50 years old and has served as a constable, corporal, or sergeant for more than 15 years, he will be promoted, and if you have been an inspector for 10 years, you will also be automatically promoted,” Murkomen explained.
KUPPET Calls for Equal Treatment
KUPPET now wants TSC to implement a similar automatic promotion framework for teachers who have stagnated for years.
“Teachers have built this nation’s future for decades,” Misori stressed. “They deserve respect, recognition, and fair career growth.”
