Kenyan Graduates Among Those to Benefit From German DAAD Scholarships
The scholarships, unveiled on April 13, are offered under the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) programme, formally known as the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst. The initiative is part of the In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme, which is designed to strengthen higher education systems within Africa while aligning academic training with sustainable development goals.
In a statement accompanying the announcement, the programme underscored its focus on empowering African graduates through access to quality education within the region, rather than abroad. “The scholarships are intended to build local capacity by supporting postgraduate education aligned with Africa’s development priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals,” the notice stated.

Under the programme, successful applicants will pursue their studies at selected universities across multiple African countries, including Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Malawi, and Burkina Faso. The regional approach is expected to enhance academic collaboration while addressing shared socio-economic challenges.
The scholarship opportunities span a wide range of disciplines considered critical to development. These include engineering, natural sciences, agricultural sciences, social sciences, and public and environmental health. Officials say the selected fields are tailored to equip graduates with skills necessary to tackle real-world problems affecting communities across the continent.
The application process has been outlined as structured and competitive, requiring candidates to follow a series of steps to qualify. Prospective applicants are first required to identify suitable programmes within the DAAD database, filtering options based on subject, country of origin, and level of study. They must then check specific deadlines and create an account on the official application portal.
Applicants are also required to prepare comprehensive documentation, including a detailed curriculum vitae in the prescribed German format, a one-to-three-page motivation letter, certified academic certificates, and proof of language proficiency where applicable. Letters of recommendation from academic referees are also mandatory.
“Applicants must ensure that all materials meet specified requirements, are properly certified, and accurately reflect their academic achievements and future study intentions,” the programme guidelines emphasise.
Once the documentation is complete, candidates are expected to submit their applications through the DAAD portal. In some cases, applicants may also be required to submit separate applications to their chosen universities, depending on the structure of individual programmes.

To qualify, candidates must be graduates or postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa and hold at least a first degree if applying for a Master’s programme. The initiative places particular emphasis on inclusivity, actively encouraging applications from women and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Beyond academic access, the scholarship package provides substantial financial support aimed at reducing barriers to higher education. Successful applicants will receive monthly stipends to cater for living expenses, full tuition coverage, and annual research allowances to support academic work.
“The programme provides not only financial support but also an opportunity for scholars to conduct impactful research that addresses real-life challenges in their fields,” the statement added.
The application deadline has been set for April 29, 2026, giving interested candidates a limited window to complete their submissions.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting that it comes at a time when many African graduates face financial and structural barriers to postgraduate education. The programme is expected to play a key role in nurturing skilled professionals capable of driving innovation and development across the region.

With competition expected to be high, prospective applicants are being urged to begin preparations early to maximise their chances of securing the prestigious scholarships.
