Kenya Battles Rising Mpox Cases as Outbreak Spreads to 22 Counties

Kenya is witnessing a growing health threat as Mpox cases have now reached 314 across 22 counties since the outbreak began in July 2024.

In a press release issued Friday, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale shared worrying updates on the national Mpox situation.

“The Ministry wishes to update the public of the Mpox disease outbreak situation in the country,” read the statement.
“A total of three hundred and fourteen (314) Mpox cases have been confirmed since the outbreak began in July 2024.”

Mombasa Leads in Infections

Four new cases were reported in the last 24 hours—three in Mombasa and one in Nairobi. Mombasa remains the hardest-hit county, now tallying 146 confirmed cases.

Following closely are Busia with 63 cases, Nakuru (21), and Kilifi (19). Nairobi has 17 reported infections. Other affected counties include Makueni (13), Taita Taveta (5), Uasin Gishu (5), Bungoma (4), Kajiado (3), and Kakamega (3).

Current Admissions and Fatalities

As of August 1, 33 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities, while 54 are under home-based care.
The ministry reported a recovery of 222 individuals, but the disease has also claimed five lives, bringing the case fatality rate to 1.6%.

Government Steps Up Response

To contain the outbreak, the Ministry of Health has enhanced surveillance and response activities.

“We have deployed multi-disciplinary Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) in collaboration with county governments and partners,” stated the ministry.

Efforts also include risk communication and community engagement to reduce misinformation and social stigma.

Safety Guidelines for the Public

Citizens have been urged to take several safety precautions.

“Avoid close contact with confirmed or suspected Mpox cases,” the ministry warned.
“Do not share personal items, practise safe sex, and report any symptoms promptly.”

Additionally, Kenyans are advised to wear protective gear like gloves and face masks when caring for sick individuals.
Maintaining high levels of personal hygiene, including regular handwashing or use of alcohol-based sanitisers, remains crucial.

“Let us remain vigilant, support each other, and act fast to prevent further spread,” the statement emphasized.

As the virus continues to spread across counties, the Ministry is calling for public cooperation, early reporting of symptoms, and adherence to health guidelines to curb further transmission.
