Sharing his joy on X, Thang’wa reflected on the award’s meaning. “The Chief of the Burning Spear award is one of the highest honors recognizing outstanding service and contributions to Kenya,” he wrote. “It transcends individual politics and focuses on the collective good of the nation.”

Despite his strong ties to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Thang’wa clarified that the award was not about loyalty to Ruto’s government. Instead, he viewed it as a tribute to his commitment to public service.
“While I may not align with the current government’s policies or leadership, my acceptance of the award honors its values. It is a recognition of service to Kenya, not a statement of political allegiance,” he explained.
Advocating for DCI Reforms
In another important move, Thang’wa urged reforms to improve public trust in the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). He proposed branding DCI vehicles with visible logos, contact information, and unique IDs to address fears of criminal impersonation.
Following a lengthy conversation with DCI officers, he expressed concern about unmarked vehicles. “Branding DCI vehicles will reassure citizens, enhance transparency, and encourage cooperation,” he stated.
To formalize this change, Thang’wa plans to introduce amendments to the National Police Service Act. He emphasized the need for visible identification on all law enforcement vehicles to prevent abuse and restore public confidence.
Commitment to Unity and Accountability
Karungo Wa Thang’wa’s acceptance of the CBS award shows his dedication to national service. At the same time, his push for DCI reforms demonstrates his commitment to building trust in Kenya’s institutions.
