The changes, announced on Friday, August 7, mark one of Wiper’s most significant reorganisations in recent years as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 General Election and strengthens its position within the opposition alliance.
Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi, Kalonzo said the appointments were aimed at injecting fresh energy into the party while drawing on experienced leaders capable of steering Wiper through the country’s evolving political landscape.

Kalonzo described Kamau as an experienced political strategist with decades of service in government and Parliament, saying his leadership would help strengthen internal party structures.
According to the Wiper leader, Kamau’s experience in coalition building and political management makes him well suited to guide the party as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
The appointment is expected to place Kamau at the centre of Wiper’s organisational and strategic planning as the party seeks to expand its national influence.
Mohamed Ali Elevated to Deputy Party Leader
The most notable appointment saw Nyali MP Mohamed Ali promoted to the position of Deputy Party Leader.
Ali, popularly known for his investigative journalism career before entering politics, has been one of the country’s most recognizable public figures for more than a decade.
Kalonzo praised Ali’s record of exposing wrongdoing, saying the qualities that made him a respected investigative journalist continue to define his public service.
“Mohamed Ali becomes our Deputy Party Leader. Long before he sat in Parliament, he was the Chief Investigations Editor of Jicho Pevu. That instinct to expose rather than conceal has not left him to this day,”Kalonzo said.
Political analysts view Ali’s appointment as an effort by Wiper to attract younger voters while strengthening the party’s public engagement and national visibility.
Ndegwa Njiru Becomes First Party Spokesperson
Kalonzo also announced the creation of a new position within the party hierarchy—that of official spokesperson.
IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon, flanked by senior police chiefs during a press briefing on election preparedness on July 14, 2026.
According to Kalonzo, Njiru’s legal background and commitment to constitutional governance make him an ideal choice to communicate the party’s positions on national issues.
The Wiper leader described the appointment as part of efforts to professionalize the party’s communication strategy ahead of a highly competitive political period.
Leadership Changes Come Ahead of 2027 Elections
The appointments come at a time when opposition political parties are reorganising their structures as discussions continue over possible coalition arrangements before the next General Election.
Wiper has recently intensified engagements with like-minded political parties as part of broader efforts to strengthen opposition unity.
Kalonzo Criticises IEBC Chair Over Election Remarks
During the same briefing, Kalonzo also criticised Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Erastus Ethekon over remarks suggesting that prevailing political conditions could affect preparations for the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo maintained that the Constitution clearly sets the election date and does not provide room for postponement under the circumstances referenced by the IEBC chair.
“IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon has told Kenyans that the Commission cannot hold elections in the current environment. I ask Ethekon, what does the law say? The Constitution fixed the date of the 2027 General Election,”Kalonzo stated.
He argued that constitutional timelines must be respected regardless of political challenges.
“Nowhere does the law give the Chairperson the right to threaten the entire nation with a postponement. If he cannot enforce the law as it is written, he should step aside for someone else,”he added.
