Kakamega: Female Teacher Shot Dead After Withdrawing Money from Bank in Mumias
Grief and shock have gripped Kakamega County following the cold-blooded murder of a beloved teacher. On Thursday, April 17, Roselyda Akinyi, a teacher at Khaunga Secondary School, was shot dead just moments after withdrawing money from a local bank in Mumias town.
According to eyewitnesses, the armed attackers ambushed her a short distance from town. The assailants, trailing her in a small car, executed the robbery swiftly and fled the scene.
A Community in Shock
Residents and colleagues are still struggling to come to terms with the loss. Akinyi, known for her dedication to education and entrepreneurship, had just completed a banking transaction when her life was cut short.
“She had a promising future and gave her all to the students,” a heartbroken colleague said.
MP Peter Salasya Demands Justice
Mumias East MP Peter Salasya expressed outrage and sorrow in a heartfelt video shared on Facebook.
“I want to condemn the tragic incident that occurred yesterday, where a teacher and businesswoman was shot and killed after withdrawing money from a bank in Mumias. It appears she was tracked from the bank all the way to where the attackers executed their plan,” he stated.
Salasya described the killing as not just a robbery, but a coordinated attack. He urged law enforcement to act swiftly.

“I’m calling on the police to move with speed and apprehend those responsible. We are aware that a particular firearm has been used in several recent robbery incidents in the area,” he added.
Questions Raised Over Bank Security
The MP didn’t stop there. Salasya strongly hinted at possible insider involvement, suggesting the robbers may have had help from within the bank.
“These people are also colluding. I want to question the banks—why aren’t they concerned about their employees’ welfare? They’re handling millions of shillings, yet they’re being paid peanuts,” he said.
Unanswered Questions, Lingering Fear
As investigations begin, the community is left with more questions than answers. Was Roselyda targeted? Who tipped off the attackers? Is there a syndicate behind the increasing violence?
For now, Kakamega mourns a mentor, mother, and friend—snatched away in broad daylight.
