IEBC Targets 6.3 Million New Voters in Historic 2027 Registration Drive

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has launched an ambitious plan to register 6.3 million new voters ahead of the 2027 General Election. If successful, this will push the total number of registered voters past 28 million—a record in Kenya’s history.

“The Commission projects to enrol an additional 6.3 million new voters, raising Kenya’s electoral voice to over 28 million strong,” IEBC announced on Monday, September 15.

Training Begins as Nationwide Exercise Looms

To kick off preparations, IEBC began training staff on Continuous Voter Registration (CVR). Chairperson Erastus Ethekon urged officers to take their roles seriously.

“CVR is the heartbeat of credible elections. Rise to the occasion and serve Kenyans with integrity,” Ethekon said.

The nationwide registration exercise begins Monday, September 29, 2025. It targets newly eligible citizens, those who’ve never registered, and voters needing updates to their details.

Accessibility and Awareness Take Center Stage

To ensure no one is left behind, IEBC has mapped registration centers across the country. Additionally, it will hold consultative forums at the constituency level to boost public awareness and engagement.

“We want every eligible Kenyan to know where, when, and how to register,” the Commission stated.

Moreover, IEBC is consolidating geospatial data to guide resource allocation and planning. This ensures that underserved areas receive adequate attention.

Technology Gets a Tune-Up

IEBC confirmed that Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) kits are being configured and tested. These devices will be crucial in capturing biometric data and ensuring secure registration.

Eligible citizens can register at any IEBC constituency office, except in areas with ongoing by-elections. Services will include new registration, transfer of voter location, correction of details, and inspection of current status.

Who Can Register?

As per Article 83 of the Constitution, a person must be a Kenyan citizen aged 18 or older with a valid ID or passport. They must not be registered elsewhere or convicted of an election offence in the past five years.

“We are committed to a clean, inclusive, and transparent voter roll,” IEBC emphasized.

New registrants will complete Form A and provide biometric data. They’ll receive an acknowledgment slip, although it won’t be required on election day.

With the countdown to 2027 underway, IEBC’s bold plan signals a renewed push for civic participation and electoral integrity.
