People Daily Journalist Abducted After Exposé on Homa Bay Hiring Scandal

Shock and outrage have gripped Homa Bay County after Habil Onyango, a journalist with The People Daily, revealed he was abducted and assaulted. His ordeal began shortly after publishing a damning exposé on irregular hiring practices within the county government.

“They are being given fake letters from the county government’s public service board and the county secretary,” Onyango stated.

The article, published on Friday, implicated a known county employee in a fraudulent recruitment scheme. Onyango said he had no idea the individual mentioned was nearby when the story went live.

Forced Retraction Demanded

Onyango recounted the terrifying moment he was confronted by unknown assailants.

“They ordered me to make an apology immediately,” he said. “To write a story apologising that the lady was not involved in the case, but I told them that such a story cannot run immediately.”

The attackers allegedly demanded a retraction and public apology. Onyango refused, insisting on journalistic integrity and truth.

Media Colleagues Rally Behind Him

Following the incident, journalists from Homa Bay County stood in solidarity with Onyango. They called on authorities to act swiftly and decisively.

“We really want to appeal to the security agencies to ensure that these known goons are apprehended and prosecuted,” said a union representative. “Let’s ensure that the lives of journalists in Homa Bay are really protected.”

They emphasized the constitutional role of the media and vowed not to be silenced.

“The Constitution of the Republic of Kenya is very clear on the responsibilities and the role of the media, and we will not be cowed,” the representative added.

Governor Wanga Urged to Act

The union also directed a strong plea to Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga. They demanded accountability for the implicated employee.

“We want to ask Her Excellency the Governor to rein in this terror,” the union rep said. “If we can hire goons to attack one Habil Onyango, then an action must be taken against her.”

The call for justice comes amid a troubling history of hiring scandals in the county.

Ghost Workers Still Haunt Homa Bay

This isn’t the first time Homa Bay has faced scrutiny. In 2019, an audit revealed over 1,780 ghost workers on the county payroll. Now, with fresh allegations surfacing, pressure is mounting for reform and transparency.

As Onyango recovers, the media community demands protection, accountability, and an end to intimidation
