How British Man Lost Millions to Kenyan Woman in Fake Bride Scam
What began as a fresh start in love ended in heartbreak and homelessness for a 69-year-old British man. After losing his wife Pauline in 2019, he opened his heart again—this time to someone he met online. Her name was ‘Anita,’ a Kenyan woman who would eventually vanish with his life savings.
Speaking to the BBC, the former United Nations worker shared how the scam unraveled. A friend he trusted introduced him to Anita while he was working in Kenya three years earlier. That simple connection led to frequent chats, growing affection, and eventually, plans to marry.
Money Sent, Promises Made—But No Bride
As their virtual romance deepened, the man agreed to relocate to Nairobi. He sent Ksh14.5 million (£85,000) to help Anita prepare their home. But upon arrival, he was greeted not with flowers or a warm embrace—but with silence. Anita was gone. So was his money.
Stranded and heartbroken, he returned to England—only to face a second round of despair. With his funds drained, he spent six weeks living on the streets and in shelters across Guildford and Woking.
Living in Poverty, Haunted by Regret
Now living in a shared flat in Staines-upon-Thames, he struggles to make ends meet. His pension barely covers rent, and most months he’s lucky to have even Ksh3,429 (£20) left in his pocket.

“I’ve got nothing, I’ve got nobody, I’ve got zero,” he shared, his voice heavy with pain. “So my quality of life is pretty poor and my future looks pretty poor. I’ve got no future.”
Pain, Anger, and Blame
“They said it was my fault, and I know I did do a stupid thing,” he admitted. “But I am a victim, and they did not protect me enough. I can’t believe how awful the banks are to people.”
His frustration runs deep. “I don’t think they put enough barriers in place to stop scammers and prevent fraud,” he added.
A Cautionary Tale for the Lonely and Vulnerable
This tragedy is more than just a personal loss—it’s a wake-up call. As online scams grow bolder, lonely hearts around the world remain at risk. The victim’s story is both heart-wrenching and eye-opening, serving as a painful reminder: love can heal, but unchecked trust can destroy.
