Former Kirinyaga Senator Daniel Karaba Dies
Former Kirinyaga Senator Daniel Karaba has passed away, bringing to an end a long public life defined by education, grassroots leadership, and parliamentary service. His death was confirmed by Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, who led tributes from political leaders, residents, and former colleagues across the country.
In an official statement, Governor Waiguru described the late leader as a devoted public servant whose contributions left a lasting imprint on the county and the nation. “We have lost a distinguished son of Kirinyaga, Hon. Daniel Karaba, whose life was defined by service, humility, and a deep commitment to education and leadership,” she said.
At the time of publication, the cause of his death had not been publicly disclosed, though preliminary reports indicated that he died after a short illness. Governor Waiguru further conveyed condolences on behalf of the county government and residents.

“I join the people of Kirinyaga and the nation in mourning his loss, and extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those he impacted. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” she added.
Karaba was widely known as Kirinyaga County’s first Senator following the establishment of devolved governance under the 2010 Constitution. He served in the Senate from 2013 to 2017, where he built a reputation as a measured and diligent legislator, particularly on matters concerning education, oversight, and county development.
During his parliamentary tenure, Karaba chaired education-related committees and consistently advocated for improvements in learning infrastructure, Early Childhood Development (ECD), and student welfare. Parliamentary records indicate that he delivered hundreds of speeches on education reform, school safety, and equitable resource allocation, cementing his image as a champion of learners and teachers alike.
News of his passing triggered an outpouring of grief on social media, particularly among Kirinyaga residents and members of the education community who remembered him as “Mwalimu Karaba” — a teacher first before becoming a politician.

One mourner wrote, “Mwalimu Karaba was a great teacher, union champion and political leader.” Others praised his calm demeanor and commitment to uplifting communities through education and public service.
Another tribute read, “Hon. Daniel Karaba served with quiet strength and a deep commitment to education and leadership. His impact will not be forgotten. Condolences to his family and all who mourn him. May he rest in eternal peace.”
Leaders from across the political divide are expected to continue issuing statements as burial arrangements are finalized. His family had not released details of funeral plans by the time of publication.

Karaba’s death marks the loss of a seasoned educator-turned-politician whose career spanned Kenya’s transition into devolved governance. For many in Kirinyaga and beyond, he leaves behind a legacy rooted in service, mentorship, and a steadfast belief in the transformative power of education.
