Former Garissa North MP Abdikadir Hassan Yussuf Dies While Traveling from Australia
Kenya is mourning the death of former Garissa North MP, Abdikadir Hassan Yussuf, popularly known as Tolly.
The respected leader breathed his last on Friday, August 22, 2025, while in transit in Dubai on his way back from Australia.
Leaders Confirm the Death
Confirming the heartbreaking news, Fafi MP Abdikarim Osman issued a condolence message.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of former Garissa North MP Hon. Abdikadir Hassan Yussuf, alias Tolly, who passed away earlier today. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time, and I pray that Allah grants them strength and patience to bear this loss. May the Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him an eternal abode in Jannatul Firdaus. Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un,” Osman said.
The cause of death has not yet been revealed.
Remembering His Leadership
Yussuf served as Garissa North MP in the 5th Parliament in 1983. Many remember him as a principled leader who dedicated himself to his people.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale also joined Kenyans in mourning.
“Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Following the death of our leader and elder Hon. Abdikadir Hassan Yusuf (Tolly), former MP for Garissa North Constituency, we pray: O Allah, forgive him and elevate his station among those who are guided. Send him along the path of those who came before, and forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Enlarge for him his grave and shed light upon him in it,” Duale stated.
A Family in Mourning
Relatives described Yussuf as a guiding light and a true inspiration. His nephew, Abdiaziz Mohamed Yusuf Ateye, shared a moving tribute on Facebook.
“To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. May Allah rest in peace the soul of my uncle Abdikadir Hassan Yusuf alias Tolly the former Garissa North M.P. He was an inspirational leader,” Abdiaziz wrote.
Nation Mourns an Elder
The passing of Yussuf has left Garissa and the entire nation in grief. His death adds to the growing list of veteran leaders who have passed away in recent months.
