A frustrated citizen wrote, “While Kenyans struggle with high living costs, MPs are busy milking taxpayers dry! We demand accountability.”
Civil society groups have now called for immediate investigations and legal action. Transparency International urged authorities to arrest and prosecute those involved. “The law must apply equally. If an ordinary Kenyan steals, they are jailed. Why should MPs walk free?” a spokesperson stated.
Lawmakers on the Defensive
Some MPs have denied any wrongdoing, claiming clerical errors in the reimbursement system. Others have blamed staff for filing the claims without their knowledge. One legislator, speaking anonymously, insisted, “This is political propaganda. I have never filed a false claim.”
However, a few lawmakers have admitted mistakes, promising to refund the excess money. One MP confessed, “I trusted my staff to handle claims, but I take full responsibility. I will return any excess funds.”
What Happens Next?
Parliament has launched an internal probe, with Speaker Moses Wetang’ula vowing to take stern action. He warned that those found guilty would face serious consequences.
