Eugene Wamalwa’s DAP-K Says It’s Ready for Edwin Sifuna as Its SG If Chased Out of ODM
Speaking during an interview on a Luhya vernacular radio station on Thursday, March 26, Wamalwa disclosed that discussions had already taken place with key figures within ODM, hinting at a possible political shift driven by internal party tensions.

“I have spoken with Sifuna and Osotsi, and both have assured me that if ODM’s situation worsens, they will move to DAP-K. My current secretary general, Eseli Simiyu, has agreed to vacate his position so that Sifuna can take over, should he be forced out of ODM, because of the strong potential he carries,” Wamalwa stated.
The remarks come against the backdrop of growing divisions within ODM, one of Kenya’s most influential opposition parties, traditionally associated with veteran leader Raila Odinga. Sifuna, who has served as the party’s Secretary General, has recently found himself at odds with sections of the party leadership, culminating in his ouster from the influential role earlier this year.
Internal ODM tensions fuel speculation
Sifuna’s fallout with ODM leadership has been linked to his increasingly outspoken criticism of the party’s perceived alignment with the government, a stance that has earned him both support and resistance within political circles. His removal as Secretary General on February 11 marked a turning point, intensifying speculation about his political future.

Wamalwa’s comments suggest that DAP-K is positioning itself as an alternative political home for dissatisfied ODM members, particularly those aligned with reformist or dissenting factions.
In addition to Sifuna, Wamalwa referenced Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi as another potential defector, indicating broader engagement with leaders who may be reconsidering their place within ODM.
Elders’ endorsement and rising profile
The elders praised Sifuna’s emergence as a prominent young leader and encouraged unity within the wider Luhya community, suggesting that his leadership potential could extend to national prominence.

“Wherever you are, when you hear this invitation, come… You will know that you are loved. Kenyans love you, but come and see for yourself,” one elder said, underscoring the symbolic weight of the call.
Calculated approach to presidential ambitions
“Elections are won with actual numbers, not social media frenzy,” Sifuna noted in an earlier interview, signalling his reluctance to be drawn into premature ambitions without concrete support.
His measured approach contrasts with the enthusiasm of some backers, reflecting a pragmatic understanding of Kenya’s electoral dynamics.
Opposition dynamics in flux
Wamalwa’s overtures highlight shifting alliances within the opposition, as parties reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election. DAP-K’s willingness to restructure its leadership to accommodate Sifuna signals both confidence in his political capital and an attempt to consolidate influence.
At the same time, the developments underscore ongoing fragmentation within ODM, raising questions about cohesion and leadership direction within the party.

While it remains unclear whether Sifuna will ultimately make the move, Wamalwa’s remarks have added a new dimension to Kenya’s evolving political landscape—one defined by negotiation, realignment, and the search for viable coalitions ahead of the next electoral cycle.
