EACC Detectives Raid Nairobi Urban Planning Chief Officer’s Home, Recover Over KSh65 Million in Cash

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has intensified its crackdown on alleged corruption within Nairobi City County after detectives raided the residence of a senior county official and recovered more than KSh65 million in cash alongside a trove of documents and electronic devices believed to be linked to an ongoing investigation.

The dramatic operation, conducted on the morning of Thursday, June 4, targeted the home of Patrick Analo Akivaga, Nairobi County’s Chief Officer for Urban Development and Planning, as investigators pursued allegations of corruption and economic crimes within the county government.

The raid marks one of the most significant anti-corruption operations involving a senior county official in recent months and is expected to place renewed scrutiny on governance and financial management at City Hall.

In a statement issued after the operation, the anti-graft agency confirmed that detectives executed a search warrant at the official’s residence and recovered substantial evidence believed to be relevant to the ongoing probe.

“Today, EACC conducted a successful search operation at the residence of Patrick Analo Akivaga, Chief Officer for Urban Development and Planning at the Nairobi City County Government, as part of ongoing investigations into alleged corruption and economic crimes within the County,” the commission stated.

According to EACC, investigators discovered large sums of cash hidden in various locations during the search.

The recovered money included KSh51.3 million in Kenyan currency and an additional US$113,000, equivalent to approximately KSh14 million at current exchange rates.

The combined amount brought the total cash recovered during the operation to roughly KSh65.3 million.

Investigators disclosed that the money was allegedly found both inside the official’s residence in Syokimau, Machakos County, and in the boot of a motor vehicle associated with the suspect.

Photographs released by the commission showed bundles of cash packed inside travel suitcases, which detectives subsequently seized as evidence.

The discovery of such a substantial amount of cash has raised questions regarding the source of the funds and whether they are connected to the corruption allegations under investigation.

Beyond the cash recovery, detectives also confiscated a range of documents and assets believed to hold evidentiary value.

Among the items recovered were title deeds, motor vehicle logbooks, laptops, mobile phones, iPads, land sale agreements, vehicle sale agreements, and official planning documents associated with Nairobi County operations.

Investigators also collected electronic accessories and other documentary materials that are expected to undergo forensic examination as part of the inquiry.

The EACC indicated that all recovered exhibits remain in its custody as investigations continue.

While the commission did not disclose the specific nature of the corruption allegations being investigated, officials emphasized that the probe remains active and that further action could follow depending on the evidence gathered.

The latest developments have once again brought attention to Nairobi County’s long-standing history of corruption allegations and financial management controversies.

Over the past decade, City Hall has repeatedly found itself at the center of high-profile investigations involving senior officials accused of misappropriation of public resources, procurement irregularities, and abuse of office.

Among the most notable cases was the 2018 arrest of former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and several county officials over an alleged KSh213 million fraud scheme.

However, after years of court proceedings, Kidero was acquitted in November 2025 after the court ruled that prosecutors had failed to prove he personally authorized or benefited from the disputed transactions.

In another landmark case, former Chief Finance Officer Jimmy Kiamba and former County Secretary Lilian Ndegwa were sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2022 after the High Court overturned an earlier acquittal related to an alleged KSh18 million procurement scandal.

More recently, Nairobi County has faced scrutiny over allegations involving billions of shillings in legal fee payments to law firms.

Critics have accused county officials of selectively settling claims while overlooking others, allegations that Governor Johnson Sakaja has repeatedly dismissed, arguing that many of the disputed liabilities were inherited from previous administrations.

As investigations into the latest case gather momentum, anti-corruption campaigners are likely to view the EACC operation as a significant test of the government’s commitment to tackling graft in public institutions.

For now, attention remains focused on the evidence recovered during the raid and whether it will lead to criminal charges against those implicated in the ongoing investigation.

The EACC has maintained that investigations are continuing and that any individuals found culpable will be subjected to the full force of the law.
